US Airways will assume American in name

Picture please?

Something like this maybe?

A fine example of backwards thinking that sadly exists 23 years after the merger. This is why retirement is a good thing.

I'm gonna have to agree with driver on this, it has been a long downhill slide since 1989.....

I'll be glad when it is finally over..........

Good riddence to "cool northern efficiency"....!!

I could be wrong, but I thought the Airbus aircraft could not be left bare since the skin is made of composites.

American Airlines aircraft are made with Alclad aluminum skin. U.S. manufacturers of airliners (Boeing, McDonnel Douglas, Lockheed, etc.) have always used Alclad since it is not normally subject to surface corrosion, and therefore can be left without paint. Non-U.S. manufacturers (Fokker, Airbus) have traditionally used an aluminum alloy skin that will indeed corrode if left bare, and therefore those manufacturers demand that their airplanes be painted, or they refuse to accept any liability for the consequences.

For a price, Airbus will build with Alclad skin and then no paint is needed. But the existing fleet of LCC Airbuses will ALWAYS have paint on them, as did the US F-28-1000s when USAir had a bare-metal livery.

Actually dont you remember the silver bullet F28s?

It was rumored that they leaked so bad that they had to repaint them - the paint was sealing all the skin joints. Don't know if that was more than crew room gossip...

It wasnt a rumor the two silver bullets had pressurization problems and were repainted.

Would it be possible to strip the paint from the US Airbus, polish the skin and then clear-coat them? Of course, getting the clear-coat to adhere to a highly polished surface may be impossible.

For the metal parts it should be possible, but you lose the advantage of less weight that comes with not painting. I would assume AA has looked at the pros and cons and deciding polishing is cheaper overall.

For composit parts, it's the UV that requires paint - the composites don't do well when exposed. So presumably a clear coat wouldn't work and would look awful anyway.

At some point AA is going to have to decide what to do with composite airframes like the 787. Leaving them unpainted is out of the question.
