US Airways Responds to Proposed Civil Penalty from the Federal Aviation Administration

In closing, I’d ask each of you to not let today’s announcement become a distraction to our mission of running a safe and reliable airline

This $5 million has me substantially traumatized. I'm calling EAP right now. Never mind, be quicker (and cheaper) to just slit my wrists. Where's my knife... It's a 5 MILLION dollar fine. Seriously, who cares? Fix the problem and move on. No reason to tell the entire Company that it's a tragegy and that we shouldn't let it affect our work. It doesn't. We don't pay the fine. No civil actions against us took place. I find it demoralizing to think that the Company actually beleves we employees (as a whole) really care about a mistake.

It's only a 5 million dollar mistake. This company has made bigger ones.

By the time the appeal is filed and negotiated down it will be less than half that, maybe even 10%.

Sounds like the days of the old America West that was almost shutdown by the FAA for mtc violations and had a record fine levied against it.

Also mtc integration is still going on to this day, its not finished, the West planes are transitioning to the east way of doing maintenance.

This goes to the Sceptre/Merlin transition. The company told the FAA that all the west issues would be taken care of because we were going over to Merlin. Unfortuantely the company was not exactly truthful and went to Sceptre instead and the FAA got ticked off because they were lied to. It seems that when it comes to computer system transitions , the company is 0 for 2. First the Shares debacle followed Sceptre. After 2 1/2 years of Shares it is still garbage.

Morgan, while I wish that the problem would not have occurred, it is refreshing to see a pro-active PR effort in an effort to acknowledge and own the problem. Good job.

Personally, as someone who has to work on these planes, I'm glad the company put out a response.

We just made front page news in the Charlotte Observer this morning. US and United. This makes US look like a bunch of buffoons.
There's only a couple of things that make headlines in CLT, US, Nascar or BOA...

That's a pretty good group; most cities would be happy to have them nowdays. Up here in GSO it is layoffs and shutdowns in the news.

Not mention NetTracer vs WorldTracer, Outlook vs Lotus Noets. Has any IT system change been beneficial.

As with so may things, there is a vast difference between "almost as good and a lot cheaper" and "not nearly as good and only a little less expensive".

"Pennywise and Pound foolish", Tempe's mantra.

As a passenger, this whole thing disturbs me. No PR spin in the world can really mask the facts, which are more than simply blatant violations in my(and the FAA) eyes.

On the whole HP-US merger topic, this is just ANOTHER failure in the overall integration efforts...and here we are 4 years post merger.

Isn't $5M more than what US collected in baggage fees this year? Maybe they should just double their baggage fees to recoup some of this money.
