"A portion of connecting traffic is going to shift to DFW, with more feed coming from domestic and international,” said the chairman of Boyd Group International in Evergreen, Colo. “A merger would strengthen D/FW in the long run."...He believes that some US Air flights connecting through Phoenix and Charlotte would be more profitable going through DFW."

i think clt and phl would be better off as would dca but i think phx would take the hit similar to pit may not as hard as pit but who know

Part of what will hit CLT is that right now, a TUS-JAX passenger is routed via the double-connection barbell method of PHX and CLT. AA already flies mainline service between TUS and DFW and between DFW and JAX. What Boyd is pointing out is that with a merger of US and AA, both of those hubs (PHX and CLT) become less important for some passengers, like the hypothetical TUS-JAX.

Granted, there are other examples of the benefits of CLT to AA's network, like for the hypothetical RIC-JAX passenger that Jamie Baker or one of the other airline analysts mentioned - AA has no efficient way of connecting those two cities (although aa.com does sell a connecting fare via MIA for that passenger).

Right now, US funnels everyone in the west thru PHX, even if they're going to LAX. AA already has quite a few Eagle flights feeding LAX, and there will be no need to connect them via PHX after the merger as they can fly nonstop from ABQ or TUS or SLC or several other places to LAX. Thus, the PHX hub becomes far less important to the combined airline. If they're going East, DFW probably already serves them well and if they're headed to LAX, AA's already got nonstops for them. I'm sure PHX remains a big station for the combined airline, but I'd gamble that it sees a lot less connections than it does now. More "Giant Focus City" and less "Big Hub."

CLT international service to Europe is going to be history.

I heard they are moving all of the PHL and CLT International service to PHX to create a supercalafragilistic international base. I read that they painted a new A330 line on the end of the A concourse in PHX. And you know it's true because its on the Internet. They can't put it on the Internet if its not true. Oh, here's my French model girlfriend. I met her on the Internet. Bonjour!

If they retain a reasonable connecting presence in CLT, LHR should stay - similar to RDU. CLT has always been primarily an international Reliever for congested PHL. When AA-US merge, I'd see that requirement disappearing as JFK-PHL are both optimized to create an 800 pound Trans-Atlantic gorilla.

I diverge from the topic of CLT..but PHL is going to be the most interesting play going forward, merger or not. Mayor Nutter says he is going to impose a $30+ head tax on every pax to pay for the new 1.1B dollar expansion. Heard Parker is already shopping the NE for other airports to hub domestic traffic, if that actually happens. UPS says they will not be "moved" to Essington, in fact they are threatening to leave entirely. Jed Clampett just hit shale gas on the PIT property, the papers here said last week they MIGHT use some of those funds to bring down the head tax. Sure would be nice to get a few more flights here.

PHL needs to be flattened, and a new airport built from scratch. As we all know, a lack of real estate won't permit that to be the case.

A new airport needs to be built across the river in NJ, which will never happen.
