I saw that the LAX-PHL red-eye left LAX on Sunday night, but due to a mechanical issue landed at ONT an hour later. Does anyody know what happened that was so serious they couldn't make it back to LAX?

USFlyer,

Takeoff alternates are only required when the weather is too bad at the departure airport to return to it - whether this was the case here I don't know.

Pure speculation...

Since the airports are so close together and the plane was reportedly aloft for an hour, it seems unlikely that the problem necessitated a landing at ONT unless the situation deterioted.

Speculation ends....

Maybe someone will have some definitive info.

Not a very common thing....I saw it once on a 737 that was transfering fuel in flight. Not supposed to happen.

Turned out that the defuel valve decided to retire. The fuel transfer was so slow that the regular fuel burn compensated for it. No worries. They continued to their destination where it was repaired in short order. ;)
