I'm not really sure why this matters. From a customer perspective, an alliance is more valuable the more members it has. That gives me more choices. If they let in "lesser" airlines, no customer is forced to fly them. But they have the option of earning miles on their favorite carrier if they are in a position where they do end up flying on the "lesser" airline.Star seems willing to take anyone with an airplane, while Skyteam and one world are a bit pickier about who becomes part of the alliance.

Sounds like sour grapes Mikey.Star seems willing to take anyone with an airplane, while Skyteam and one world are a bit pickier about who becomes part of the alliance. So this is great news and CAL will bring so much to the table.
They fly HKG-PEK-SHAG out of EWR and this will be great now. Unless UAL starts IAD-HKG and SHANG next....
I think you're a bit mistaken on who flys what to where. CAL doesn't fly non-stop to PVG. If you want to get to PVG aboard CAL out of EWR you'll be switching planes in NRT to a NWA flight the rest of the way to PVG.
On the other hand, you could simply fly UAL NON-STOP from both ORD/SFO to PVG and the same to HKG as well.
You are right however, that adding CAL to STAR will be a good and welcome addition that will benefit their FF from the NYC area as well as adding a huge benefit to UAL customers wanting greater schedule flexibility from the NYC area. Win-Win in my eyes.

.... Washington is going to grow grow grow International.. In Nov 2008 IAD-MIA is going back to a320 twice a day
airbus over those RJ's.... Connecting TAM with UAL... CAL is stopping IAH-IAD and CLE-IAD and United is adding Airbus for the first time over RJ to IAH to connect KWI-Dubai
to IAD- IAH oil-2- oil... good move.....
Airborn1,
Thanks for the update. I hadn't heard about the recent plans you outlined. If true that's good news and makes a lot of sense. The synergies of this alliance, especially given both CAL's/UAL's strength's in Europe/Asia respectively, made too much sense to not have pressed forward together.
The IAD-HKG route is interesting. I do believe UAL would have to do it on the -400 (based on aircraft availability) and of course that'll mean the economics of doing so will be under intense scrutiny before the decision will be made to go forward with it. I'd be interested in seeing some data on what sort of O/D traffic would support such a venture. Right now I'd say it'll be quite a ways off based on the fact you can get there (HKG) from both EWR/ORD. Time will tell. Thanks for the info.

I heard today that if we get through this mess of oil and stuff..UAL wants to fly from IAD-HKG... We know CHicago flies it also.. Chicago used to have 2 flts during peak time
to HKG at one time. LAX was started twice and ended and heard later they might move it to IAD and give it a try. Beijing does very well from Chicago and IAD.. So never say never because CAL flies EWR_HKG and UAL does it out of Chicago....

The rumors on IAD-PEK were that it would downsize to a 777 and also possibly reduce to less than daily service. Additionally ultra long hauls are getting hurt the most economically these days. However HKG would not shock me as it would strengthen the noon bank at IAD, which is the weakest bank for international flights. Off the top of my head it only has the NRT flights and the PEK flight, plus an LHR arrival.
Airborn,
So yours saying later this year we wil have a mainline IAH flight? How do you know all this stuff?
