It's not being done because it's trendy. It's being done because the cost differential is huge. There's no reason to outsource overseas unless the cost differential is substantial, because such outsourcing (particularly of many of the 777 parts) is very expensive to implement.

Boeing is in China also due to the fact that they [China ] have what, 3billion people? Boeing wants to sell airplanes and China wants to buy them. Part of the sell is to build portions of the machines in the market you are targeting or as part of a larger agreement.

Additionally, China is very big (though not the only country) on negotiating to get part of the manufacturing done in the "homeland" in exchange for aircraft orders.

If those 757's were owned by BofA, and U is so in bed with them in CLT and the like, why would they be stored? If memory serves, those were newer birds that U ordered. They sure could be used instead of 737's to Florida cities and higher density longer haul routes right about now.
