...ok seriously this thread is about 332's not about america west's humble beginnings to it's golden era with leased KLM 747's servicing Nagoya...(not to be confused with Goya) ...

............
sooooo
....anybody know if we're still gonna be using the passport system on the new planes? they take up waaay too much space and i can't stretch my legs! ps. what's the deal with the breakfast service to europe...i'm sure it's much cheaper to offer fruit salad or some other altrenative to sugar coated corn syrup bread dough.

Yeah. How long did the America West foray into widebody service last? That 747 alone dang near bankrupted America West.

USAirways has been operating widebody aircraft successfully and profitably since 1988 (1987 if you include predecessor Piedmont.) In fact, it's arguably the east widebody service that right now is keeping PHX and LAS money-losers afloat.

I have no idea. I was barely in grade school when it all went down. I just thought it'd be lively to bring up HP's 747 experience. Ah yes, the heady days of bold, daring, extravagant, illogical expansion. And to think I was there for none of it! PHX was not an international city 20 years ago and it still really isn't one today.

This airline is a psychiatrist's dream: split personality disorder in which one has the mental capacity of an eight year old and the other a stuffy messianic complex.

You know what? I agree with that, especially when it is applied to the list of (east, and now Tempe) Chairmen, CEOs and Presidents we have suffered since 1987. It is a very apt description of almost all of these guys.

In fact, if they published a bio of Dave Siegel, I think you would be quoted in the book jacket.

Wait....people are actually still buying the product?

I work HARD at staying off the airline...so far, so good...maybe 2 paid segments in the last quarter of the year?

jeez, can we stop the whole east and west bickering already!? who cares who had widebodies and who didn't . grow the hell up!! enough of the nonsense. and for the person who asked about the entertainment system on the new birds. they are not p@ssport. its a new and much better system. happy holidays .

Amen to that.

When USAir and Piedmont merged 20+ years ago, was there such bickering about US North and US South?? Perhaps it was contained to stations since there was no such thing as the world wide web.....

As for the P@ssport system, it was state of the art almost 10 years ago when it was unveiled on the new A330 deliveries. Not one single US airline had anything close to it.

Newer systems are smaller and lighter and don't require the big boxes throughout the cabin on the floor. Will the existing A330-300 fleet be retrofitted with the system that's going into the 332's?

Actually the Gulf War drove HP into bankruptcy. The 747s and the money losing Hawaii and Nagoya routes didn't help, but the 747s weren't the main culprits in America West's Chapter 11 filing. They flew them between 1989 and 1991. At the time of their bankruptcy filing, HP actually had firm orders for 8 brand new 747-400s, but Chapter 11 killed that plan. The 747s that HP acquired from KLM were delivered in 1977. They were major maintenance headaches for HP which accelerated the financial hemorragging that ultimately resulted in their Chap. 11 filing. They used to fly the 747s between PHX and LAS, as well as PHX and JFK.

In the late 80s and early 90s, the HP management team was very aggressive. Ed Beauvais and Mike Conway had designs on a mini-hub in HNL offering Pacific Rim service to places as far flung as Sydney, Australia, as well as, in addition to Nagoya, Tokyo and Seoul, Korea.

In retrospect, one of the worst decisions made by the Beauvais/Conway team was the money losing 747 and Nagoya moves. One of their shrewdest moves was in securing the A320 delivery slots that were reserved for defunct Braniff II. The A320 has been a successful workhorse for HP/US. Hopefully, the HP/US merger will ultimately be the shrewdest move made by the current US--former HP-- management team. The results thus far are mixed at best. Only time will tell.

great and interesting post ebwgs. have a great holiday my friend. and yes the A330-300's will be retrofitted with the new entertainment system as well as lie flat seats in envoy the same seats that the A330-200's will be delivered with . not the same seats as the 767. much nicer and better ones. the A330-200's are going to look sweet inside. the company is spending a lot of money in the interior except well for the lower deck crew bunks.

Oh, YES! But like you mention, there was no internet so the dirty laundry didn't get the public airing it would get today. The whole process was contentious, but once Kagel made his decision most of the east guys just sucked it up and moved on. The seniority integration would have been moot if we had at least gotten Piedmont's management instead of USAir's. We would probably own the world right now as Gordon Bethune shaped the combined US/PI/PS into the powerhouse it could have been....no, should have been.
