Today I spoke with a friend - (28 year) flight attendant. This year and last year have not been too good for her, having to unfortunately go into FMLA absense twice. Well, if you work over at the AWA side of things, you know how draconian they are over there, and how they like to play the "we didn't receive your paperwork" and "there is not sufficient proof" games. They have scheduled her for a mandatory meeting after successfully rejecting the latest FMLA. US is urgently scheduling the meeting ahead of any attempt of hers to rectify the mess that US has purposely created with the paperwork, so that they can put her on a CAD during that meeting.

The other day, I spoke with my ex-roomate who told me that US put her on a CAD, after she failed to convert two sick occasions to FMLA. If you work for US on the AWA side, you know that AWA makes employees go through the hassle of going through the extra step of making a call to (a voice mail of Brian Connor at the FMLA department) in order for them to manually convert the SK day into a MF day.

I recall two years ago they attempted the same thing with her, in trying to schedule the CB urgently enough so that she wouldn't have any time to fix the MF days, that the FMLA department failed to change on her schedule.

It is the only company that I know of, that will make employees go through such hardships of having to independently deal with another step in the way in the midst of an illness.

At US Airways (AWA), it's always a rat-race, with the company making it as miserable and difficult for employees as can possibly be made.

I heard stories of Mike Conway giving pilots personal loans as advances on their paychecks.

I heard of pilots who were not off probation being recalled (early 90's) when they had no contractual right to be.

I personally knew a pilot who had the fleet manager shuffle vacation days to cover an FMLA leave so that the pilot wouldn't have to miss out on as much pay during the leave.

As for me, I come to work and have never had a paycheck bounce.

Horrible place to work, just horrible!

I've noticed that there's generally little consistency in how discipline goes down. Some things are more cut and dry, such as attendance, but even that is not always the case. It often depends on who you are, what they think you've done wrong, who's responsible for disciplining it, and whatever it is upper management wants the front line to crack down on for a given month. it depends also on what they feel like pursuing and whether or not they feel like making an example out of someone. Vile business, nothing you could ever pay me enough to have to deal with day in and day out. It takes a certain lack of integrity to knowingly apply the rules unfairly.

The bottom line is always CYA, and that's not just at US Airways....

You wise oh Chock Jockey! When you-work backwards from the point of veiw tha they are out to bend you over and bleep you without lube the very worst thing that can happen if they don't is you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Or you waste your life with an outlook that robs you of the chance to enjoy your job.

I've enjoyed most every job I ever had, including the one I have now. That doesn't change the reality that you're hired to be fired. It's not a question of "If" merely a question of when. It's the way capitalism works. It's not evil, it's a fact of life! Ignore it at your peril.

40 Years, a Gold Watch and pension was always an unrealistic myth covered up by unprecedented economic growth which lasted from post WWI through unto the late '70's with wages inflated largely because about 35% of the workforce was organized.

I was downsized about 3 years ago and I bear the company no ill will. I had 6 great years there. It was my fault! I got fat dumb and happy while ignoring the signals that the company was going to cut back. Of course I was dealing with my addict live in G/F and her equally addicted kids as well, so I failed to keep my eyes on the prize. That whole last year I should have been looking and pulled the plug on them before they pulled it on me.

I'm in a situation right now where I just verbally accepted a position and I'm going for my piss test tomorrow. I have a competing company who if they ever get off their assets will pay me almost 40% more so I'm dragging my feet on the start date in hopes of getting a firm offer from the higher paying company. I know the guy will be flaming pissed if I pull the rug out and take the better gig to which I say "Tough Shite pay more". I have no loyalty except to that ugly B*stard I see in the mirror each day.

It's like during the exit interview at the other job a few years back when the HR lady says "Don't be bitter or angry", I laughed in her face and asked her, "Did the paychecks bounce? I have severance correct? Unemployment? We're all in agreement as to what I'm owed? OK, so what's to be bitter about?" I thanked her for her time and turned and walked out. It's just business folks. Get used to it. I mean it's not like they raped your spouse

How much FMLA did she use the first time? If she used it all, she is not eligible again for another 12 months, that's the law (like most companies, US goes on a "rolling FMLA" rather than a calendar year FMLA)

Yes, he did, same for FA's. My old department would make personal loans to flight attendants for silly things like cosmetic surgery. That was back in the no union days, when management could do nice things, and sometimes the employees took advantage and never paid back. But, now, the managers just say "too bad, its not in your contract, tough luck, can't help you"

You failed to mention that they say it with a snicker, as if thats my punishment for being a part of a union. My contract doesn't say that the company can't pay me more than my bottom of industry wages, it just says they can't pay me less. But, your attitude is typical for management. They have no problem violating the CBA when it favors them, but not when it might favor the worker.

That's their job!! Do you think US Airways is the United Way? If a company plays the "Contract Game" it's because the person supervising you in Management got burnt before.

I understand that, I'm not the one trying to paint a rosy picture of management as people who would go 'above and beyond' for the employee. Not bitchin about it, just adding the other part to it that was left out.

I was Shanghai'd and forced to work, imprisoned, water boarded and force to watch training videos.

What losers the entire lot of you are all!
