Heard that runway 23 in CLT was closed by the NTSB.

Fact or fiction? Anyone else hear this?

Didn't know NTSB could close a runway.... Gonna be closed for maint next couple of nights..

They don't have that power. They are advisory to the regulators. The FAA would be the federal regulating bureaucracy with the power to close it, if it were really to close.

Or the Captain at the end of a red eye being told it is open for noise abatement.

I was actually being sarcastic, but there is pressure from the FAA to speed up the construction of a fouth parallel runway and close 5/23. I had heard that there were two instances recently of wildlife on 23 and the landng aircraft were told to do a go around while there was traffic departing 18C..

Deer have been a real problem at CLT. US 737 plows thru herd of deer on 36 Center in 2010, hits at least one of them:

And the year before, smaller US pland lands and strikes small deer while taxiing toward terminal:

Sounds like Jerry Orr should have called in Ted Nugent and friends to eradicate the deer on the property. :D

Seriously, though, sounds like CLT needs a taller perimeter fence.

Yesterday when they were landing south i asked ground why they weren't using it and they said that the FAA was looking into it and for the time being they aren't using it. When coming up from florida the ILS for 18L was in use. Weather was 10sm 20BKN TSRA.
I asked for runway 23 because there were cells on the final approach to 18L. I was told that 23 was not an option today.
So……no straight answers. But if they aren't going to be using it, I think they should NOTAM it out of service.

23 has been in flux for a couple years. Minimums used to be 950 or something close to that. A couple years ago they were changed to 1100. It is one of those strange cases where the VASI and the Glideslope give you two different paths. If you followed the glideslope you touched down just past the "hump". When 23 crosses 18L it starts a downward slope of something like 1.5 degrees. Could cause interesting times to somebody that did not know it sloped off on a 7000 ft runway. So the change to 1100 ft mins, after that it says the glideslope unusable below 1100 in the info and you switch to the VASI's, which puts you down before the "hump". But it will be about 1.5 dots low on the glideslope.

A wild guess about the last few days? Maybe something to do with a review of runways following the Asiana crash? Who knows.

Not sure what time you came in Gabby, but I was on 23 late morning and they were going northbound as soon as noise abatement ended that morning...It had closed the night before so rubber removal could be performed in the intersection...

Just found out that 5/23 is now a night time only runway... It will be used starting at 23:00...
