Recalls

Has anyone heard anything about possible F/A recalls? Will they ever happen? If so, When?
From what I have heard no.

There are quite a few out on voluntary leaves that will be returning in June.
Others will correct me if I am wrong, but I think at least 1,000.

They are still offering voluntary time off.

They are getting rid of all F100's with no replacments.

They have stated several times this year, there are no plans for recall in 2004.

But, one can hope, they have put about 250 domestic on international, and may need to add more. I just wouldn't hold my breath.

A friend of mine who works for Eagle Flight Service told me that the reason AE is in need for 500 additional flight attendants is..."All of the AA flight attendants who are on furlough and now work for AE, will be returning to AA in April."

If they're hiring for this reason then let's hope we will have some folks back soon.

I heard that also. However, let's keep in mind that
1. AE is growing like crazy right now, and
2. they have incredible turnover anyway.

A furloughed friend of mine who worked for AE for 5 years before moving to AA told me that AE has such a high turnover rate that relative to AA they have practically no flight attendants with over 5 years seniority. There are some, but not many.

De-peaking Miami soon, plus reducing turn around times and keeping the planes flying, rather than sitting waiting on the ground. Will increase the utilization factor. Not all that F100 flying is going eagle, lots of it will stay AA like it already has. We have a fair number of people who wanted to retire already but are waiting for Aug and the 777 award. I think we will see more return this year. No leaves other than the typical PLOA, and educational are being offered.

Mikey, you stated the 777 award will be made in Aug. It was my understanding that it will be made in Oct., and I saw posted somewhere else that it would be this Spring. I looked on the APFA website and found the text of the hearing, but can't find anything as to the award date.

Does anyone have anything in writing regarding the award date?

Other than that, from your lips to God's ears, as they say. I agree that if attrition hits almost 1000 again this year, the company will need additional bodies before the end of the year. I think a lot depends upon how many of the 1300 OVLs actually return to work at the end of June. That the company has said that even PLOAs will not be offered for the rest of the year after the return of the OVLs suggests to me that the company is expecting most of them to return to work, but staffing will be tight. I've heard differently, but I guess no one will really know until it happens.

I believe the number is about 1300. I can't imagine the company not needing more people before the July bid period, however. I keep waiting to hear of the cancelation of at least several hundred leaves before they expire.

The retirement of the F100 fleet has been in the plans for a couple of years. The company has not announced any downsizing as a result of losing those airplanes.

Yes, but no plans to recall doesn't equate to plans not to recall.

While international traffic has been increasing at a higher rate than domestic, domestic has been growing as well. I think we'll be hearing something within a month.

Well to put an end to this myth, I can tell you that a colleague of mine who was furloughed 02July03 is going to an Eagle interview on Monday and her seniority falls within the top 20 to be recalled at AA. If she gets the job it wouldnt make any sense for AE to hire someone and train them for them to leave within the year. It seems to me that a recall anytime soon won't come until the end of this year.

That's assuming that AA and AE are coordinating with each other. Beyond the flight schedules, there is little talk or planning between the two. The idea that an AA manager expecting a recall would notify AE and tell them dont hire any AA people above this seniority number, is beyond real.

You never know what AA and AE talk about. I'm just waiting until AE makes the AA f/a's give up their recall rights to work for them.

i know a few people who were recalled in dec of 2003 who were in training in october a few days before the announcement was made. i was going for my interview a few days after the announcement and i canceled it when i found out obviously.

Sam Morales has posted on a yahoogroups that he has heard that the company will be calling all the OVL people back this summer. If any of those do not come back, they will begin recalling people on furlough

The company has made it clear that the OVL's are over after June. What I'm having trouble with is trying to figure out how they'll manage without more people on the line before that. Cancelling some leaves early or recalling seems to be the only answer.

Pages 185 and 410 of the contract address the issue of how much notice must be given. It doesn't specifically say, but it does say that partnerships will be dissolved before OVL's are cancelled, and that OVL's will be cancelled before recalls. 45 days notice must be given before dissolving a partnership (except in "emergency") so I think we could realistically expect the usual 60 days notice if anything happens before the OVL's expire at the end of June.

Yes, I've been wondering about that too. They are losing at least 60 a month from retirements, medicals, etc., so the 350 they recalled in December will just about cover the recalls. And since they are not "overstaffed" at the moment, how will they be covering the added flights that will be starting in May? I guess we await further development.
