What's new

Question... How many unable commutes does one get?

You didn't hit a nerve...I just think your rant is a bit useless. I commute and I plan accordingly...so do the majority of people that commute. What is your point really? Why repeat what we already know?

First of all I said in my post that many not ALL. If you commute and plan accordingly....well cakes and pies for you. We applaude you. If you find my post or rant as you called it useless and you "plan accordingly" why bother responding? Don't try it. Maybe you can copy MY POST and post it on the broken hip board in the crew room. Maybe you'll educate a few that way.

Oh good grief people don't act like this is something new! 🙄 That's what everyone does around here is turn their heads and shrug their shoulders. "Oh it's just the system" No it's poor planning. Yes PIT and Florida people. You do not have a 19:00 check in and start prancing to TPA, FLL or PIT at 2pm with just your two backups. Irresponsible period.
The other day great gosh it was like watching popcorn pop all the trips opening! Wham bam thank you mam!...your gone and get there fast! We all know weather hits so how so about turning on the Weather Channel the day before? Not all but some are chronic with this crap and all it's doing is slapping your co-workers in the face. I saw a few brag about having 5 or 6 unable to commutes just laughing in the crew room like it was no big whoop. I just want to see some of these people's applications because it does not say anywhere on mine that you will always and forever be based in XXX city. PHL could close tommorrow. In the real world plants close, Dupont moves a research facility and so forth. Guess what you either move or you quit. In the airline industry you have a 3rd option to commute but some think it's a right not a privilege.

THANK YOU! ! ! ! Now let the "we all hate commuters" and "defense" comments spill in. FYI I commuted for years so save it.

Does anyone know the answer to the original question?

For some reason my memory is chanting "three", am I close?

The reason this hits nerves is because nobody likes the situation. Not the commuters who became commuters involuntarily and not the reserves that have to clean up after them.

Just once I'd like to see someone understand the sinking feeling of a reserve who has been watching the bloody computer all day, is mentally exhausted and just wants to settle in for the evening so they can do the same bloody thing tomorrow only to start seeing CATCREW erupt before their eyes and realize they have three minutes before their night becomes twelve hours longer and they didn't have a chance to tap the ATM, they have one pair of pantyhose that doesn't have runs in it and scheduling is about to take the day off that had the impossible to get appointment sitting on it.

Spare me the "a reserve should always be ready for a trip." I'll counter that you should live in base.

A little compassion for eachother people.

A lot of us "get it." We were reserves in PIT before it closed. We've been there and done that.

I don't commute. But to the party who began this discussion, instead of villifying your fellow employees who must or choose to commute, shouldn't you be offering constructive information? If you were so successful in your commute, why not provide guidelines for the successful commute? Do you have any? If not this topic is null and void and please don't bring it up again.

Hey..I always tip my hat to the commuters. I don't know why or how they do it. But it's like a work of art to me because I live in base and the idea of commuting makes my skin crawl.

I moved to CLT so I wouldn't have to commute and discovered I like living here. It works for me. But I'll tell ya, I was sweating bullets with the proposed Delta deal......I just knew I'd have to start commuting into ATL. Either driving or flying it. Yuck, puck!!

My heart goes out to all commuters. You're brave souls.

I can confirm this. I was checking in for my trip in CLT @ 1530 and the PIT bus just pulled in with about 6 commuters, 3 of which missed their check ins and trips and it wasn't because they didn't "plan". Their check ins were between 1430-1530 and all 3 of them were trying to get to CLT on the first flight from PIT @ 730am. They had something like 4 flights to get them there. Combination of a maintence problem on the first flight, they rebooked the passengers on the next so that one went out full. They were saying the 3rd flight didn't have that many seats to begin with and they didn't get on because of their seniority, they ended up on the delayed 730 flight that had the mechanical which left before the 4th flight was scheduled to leave and landed at 1530. $%^it happens, that you can not control. I think its a very unfair statement to make that they do not plan. I do not commute but I honestly felt bad for them they got to that airport at 630am to go to CLT to start work at 1530 and had 4 flights with only 1 that was booked heavy, but not full. How much more do you want them to plan? Honestly I sat there thinking, thank God I was in a position that I could move to CLT. Not everyone is in a position that they can pack up their family and move.

Keep in mind, nothing is sacred in this industry. PIT in the day had nearly 3800 flight attendants who would of ever thought it would be gone? All of these people lived in a base many for well over 20+ years. Just because you live in a base today, doesn't mean you will tomorrow.

Look, in my earlier post I CLEARLY said that many NOT ALL but many don't commute properly. I commuted for quite a long time due to being displaced. It's the way of the world around here. I'm in NO WAY saying that I don't sympathize with commuters. It's very easy for some to tell ya that it's a choice and you should just move. All I'm saying is that when things ARE in some commuters control they still don't plan accordingly. There are flight attendants that don't leave a second flight to commute to base on. There are flight attendants that STILL use WN as their "backup" flight when in fact it's not considered your backup. There are flight attendants that don't take into account that because it's sunny where they commute from PHL is a problem. That one raindrop on the runway in PHL could possibly hinder their getting to work on time due to ground delays etc. For all of the commuters (again I did it for almost 7 years) that commute and follow the rules there are a lot that don't. I sit reserve and watch the screen so PLEEEEEEEASE don't tell me otherwise. Let a WN flight cancel into PHL from PIT and watch option 44 on catcrew. SAVE IT! ! ! I have a responsibility to sit in base on duty since that what a reserve is for. A b/h or a released reserve with a trip has an obligation to plan accordingly to make their checkin. CASE CLOSED! ! ! ! Next topic.

As a commuter across the country for almost 10 years I feel qualified to pass on a tale I'll never forget in the CLT crewroom by one "silver-back gorrilla" Captain to another:

"When I showed up at the gate for my commute and found that the flight CX for no crew, I called scheduling and told them this: I'm only as reliable as our airline is..."

It took 10 minutes for the laughter to stop.

It's worked for me ever since.

Try that line as a flight attendant. You'd be in your supervisors office so fast your head would spin. Well after you made it into base that is.

Not to be insensitive, but I overheard several FA's talking in CLT last week:

"So scheduling called me the other day...they tried to show me as a NCT...then pinned the delay on me.....then told me I had to go to PHX..."(yadayadayada)

The group of them discussed their understanding of their contract

They were all over the map.

Fix that first...then you can go to work

This is the disconnect. In the real world, the expectation is you show up and do your job, not rummage through a contract or HR handbook and try to find out just how poorly you can perform and not get fired. If I don't show up at my job, I can expect my boss to have a poor view of me. If I make it a habit, I expect to get fired. He could care less if I live I block from work, or 10 hours. I have a job to do, and if I'm not willing to do it to my fullest ability, there are plenty of qualified people who will. If my employer decides to close the office in my city, then I either move to another city (if they even allow that) or look for a new job. It sounds if most of those who commute feel entitled to this luxury that few other people have. You have a privelege, and if you aren't responsibly enough handle that privelege, then expect to be shown the door. Plenty of other people who don't have to commute would be happy to have your job. This is how the other 99.9% live.

I think offically it is 2 failure to commutes, but you have personal days, sick calls, and swaps/trades with other FAs. It will be a little more difficult now that the company is pulling flight records from other airlines for non-revs for all of these options to be used, but not impossible.

Commuting is part-time job, I would rather do ETB. =)
