Please Explain Siegel's Sins

PB,

Your post above is right on point....that is the very "crux" of Siegel's demise at this airline.

After coming out of BK, Dave wanted to wage a war with his unionized labor. Instead of getting a new LR Team, he chose to remain with the "hardball" approach. Labor had so many cost saving ideas that were rejected, without getting a second look from the company.

We want to overcome these bad times and see this company grow. But management has different ideas and seems to think that taking more from the employees is the way to run an Airline.

More and more I see fellow employees who just don't care anymore. It's been 15 years since a merger and management still doesn't understand how to properly run an Airline.

I was speaking to a Captain the other day who had a 24 + hour layover in YYZ. Is this a good way to utilize your Flight Crew...?

Labor doesn't make this "bad" decisions, it's management that does that.

I have always said dave mad a huge mistake when he didnt strip the contracts when he had half the chane. Would have i liked it no! But look at us now!

Some thoughts...

For those that say Siegel didn't use BK to cut employee expenses enough. Which airline has had the biggest reduction in employee expenses -as a percentage - in the post 9-11 environment?

To me his biggest mistake was emerging from BK and sitting back thinking the job was done. By the time he realized (apparently) that the "Plan" wasn't working it was too late. He had alienated too many employees and burned too many bridges to recover.

Hey AO,

Guess you forgot that US and WN were the only two major airlines to post a profit in the last quarter.

As you know, the second quarter is traditionally US Air's most profitable, and the combination of all four quarters renders losses, to which US Air is particularly vulnerable due to its low cash reserves. As well, oil price rises since Q2 hurt US Air disproportionately because it does not have the financial credit standing to enact hedges.
