Pit Cuts

wow i'd never thought i'd see some of the cities such as iah and cle and others but that is a heck of a drastic cut if it holds true what a shame

i'd like to add that i sure do remember the days yuo couldnt walk thru the Pittsburgh international airport. ahh ahh memories!

you read the list incorrectly. Those are the cities that will still be serviced from PIT and it shows the cities that will be cut in bold.

I agree, which is what makes another bankruptcy probable if RSA can find a way to preserve their stockholding. When DS's departure was followed by Bronner's "with you or without you" comment, the course of action became plain.

The competition isn't resting while US sorts this out either. Witness: the pile-on in the Caribbean; JBLU beating US to LGA-FLL with fares 50% less; Indy Air in the Washington market. (FWIW, I flew Indy last week at a price 1/7th that of a DCA ticket.)

If Bronner doesn't see progress with concessionary talks, he'll act well before Sept 30. PIT's drawdown is unstoppable and the company cannot redeploy its assets sensibly with an unknown cost structure.

Im not sure I believe that PIT is going to lose the FRA service. All Flight Attendants had to bid the Flight Attendant Global Bid for 2005 and the PIW(PIT Intl) base was included. This bid closed on 7/31 I believe. I could see PIT-FRA maybe running 4x a week instead of daily but we will just have to wait and see. I dont see PIT-LGW returning at all. I think a big mistake was made not allowing the second PHL-LGW flight to return this summer. I work PHL-LGW alot and the flight is always over sold by huge numbers. Throwing these overbooked pax on BA or other airlines is costing the company thousands if not millions each month.
Another possibility of using the extra ac is by restarting he BOS-FRA service or starting PHL-CPH service.

Cut from PIT but not from the system in most cases.

Piney,

PIT is not going to loose service to LGA, SAN, etc. The cities we loose are listed in BOLD print. Reread the Flyertalk posting. If PIT looses the big cities then US looses PIT all together. I know I won't step foot on a single US plane if I can't get to my major cities I need to get to for work.

Again, Reread Flyertalk posting.

PIT will retain service to major cities. PIT will become a major focus city just like DCA/BOS/LGA and the soon to be focus city of FLL  .Im guessing PIT will see service to LAX/SFO/LAS/PHX/BOS/BDL/LGA/BWI/ATL/MIA/FLL/TPA/MCO/RSW/MSY/DFW/ORD/BNA and maybe a few others. I didnt add SEA because Im dont sure if their is demand for PIT-SEA service. I may be wrong.

I'd bet within a year expect to see very small (B1900) markets like Morgantown, Clarksburg, Bradford, Hagerstown, just to name a few, on the chopping block. Didn't Lakefield say that continued service into those markets would rest solely upon the contract air carriers choosing to fly them?

I have no idea if the following list is true but here is a rather long list of upcoming cuts to PIT flights:

The *really* small towns are often EAS subsidized, in which case they won't lose service. The ones which currently have service to PIT might have that service move to IAD or PHL, however.

Im certain EAS contracts are bid every two years. An airline currently operating a EAS route under contract can not discontinue flying the route without finding a suitable replacement airline. However, once the two year contract expires, the airline is able to walk away from the route by simply not bidding.

The majority of those markets are EAS subsidy cities that are subsidized by the US government. That is why US Airways (Midwest) is starting new PIT-LNS service in September.

However, after a two year period, the EAS subisdies go up for bidding again to regional carriers, and the regional affiliates can move service to another city. For example, Midwest Express' service to Buckley and Bluefield, WV was up for re-bidding this year. PIT service to both cities will be replaced with CMH and IAD service.
