PHL problems and solutions (equipment)

I believe that it is a fair ask. If we can avoid the normal PHL explosion that happens every time this question is asked, this topic could go a long way. I am not saying that action will be taken from the discussion here, but I know it will get ignored if you fly into a rant.

What percentage of equipment is currently down, and what is the turnaround to have said equipment fixed?

How prepared are the de-icing pads? What has or needs to be done for the winter season?

What avenues do or have the station managers available to identify their concerns? Maybe there is a problem in the reporting system to HQ.

What should Philadelphia’s role in this be? It is their airport after all.

We know that the baggage system has had problems in the not so distant past. This latest bump was a software issue (from what I’ve read). What backup plans are in place, or you would like to see in place?

Getting rid of Al Crellin is currently not an option in your hands, and firing him today will not fix the immediate concerns. The equipment and personnel to the left and right are. What can be done to bring attention to those concerns to the forefront?

Ok we have problems in PHL,we all know this, how can we fix the ones we have and try to get through Thanksgiving.
Or UHHH I dont the cavalry coming Tonto....

PHL has improved in many ways, but as Forrest Gump said "it's like a box of chocolates-you never know what you're going to get."

From where I sit I see the new employees trying very hard to do a good job. Not sure if it is turnover or additional personnel but it seems that weekly they are training a group of new fleet service folks. Just it's not the same ones being retrained on a weekly basis!

One thing that concerns me is what appears to be a casual attitude from the pushback crews regarding safety. This is not their fault entirely. It must be emphasised during their initial training and reviewed periodically. This includes no headset pushes ("there are no headsets to be found"), improper marshalling signals and positioning, ground equipment inside the parking safety zones and more.

One person lost her life recently in an accident at DCA driving a belt loader. Last week I observed a belt loader being driven UNDER an A321.

Bringing new employees into the mix provided an opportunity to "do it right" from the start. But I fear too much of the old culture remains and instead of being molded positively by experienced employees, the opposite may in fact be occuring.

Doug Parker approved our plan to add 30 tugs, 17 belt loaders, and 5 push tractors to the PHL ramp --- all new equipment, totaling approximately $2 million. These units will begin to arrive in PHL by mid-November with all units scheduled to be delivered by December 20th.

Sincerely,

Anthony V. Mulé

Just to let everyone know today is the past the middle of the month and no equipment is in site for Philly. Meltdown 2005 is on the way! BOHICA!

On a side note we have not turned a profit yet and the execs all get bonus's what a brillant move by the Board of Directors. Lets spend more money on them and screw Philly sure they promise us everything but still nothing yet but can you smell the smoke Rome is burning. Promises Promises Promises. Someone better be lining up the Semi's to move all the misconnected bags.

Happy Thanksgiving

If you arent going to be able to load the bags, can you at least push the planes on time so we can get the people downline out on time? Thats really a double whammy to not only arrive without the bags, but to be late as well making those connecting in CLT/PIT/DCA late too. Thanks for the extra effort! :p

Well from what I understand the pushback tugs for the planes are in short supply as well. It would be a dream to see Philly staffed with the right amount equipment.

Imagine push back ontime with your bag on the plane wow wouldnt that be great!

Moderator I noticed the topic name changed from

Equipment Critical

Why?

My friend (another airline's employee thus familiar with how things are supposed to work) nonreved on US through PHL (F Concourse)on the night of the Nov 15th. He could not believe the disorganization and confusion. The aircraft at their gate had a last minute swap and all of their bags were never unloaded and reloaded on the swapped a/c. The bags on both airplanes went to the wrong cities. This is an embarrasment and must stop. How do we retain customers without the people and tools and facilities to do it properly! It reminded me why I dislike giving people buddy passes.... :(

and What in the heck is the problem over in the "F" terminal, not to mention that it's a busride over to New Jersey? Is it really a problem of equipment shortage, stupid people or a combination of both? There has to be an answer!

Let me say right up front, that this thread/question I ask, is in NO WAY a disrespect to the hard working folks in PHL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Given the fact(s) that Philly is AGAIN/STILL short handed on the ramp, STILL without "ample reliable equiptment", and STILL without TOP NOTCH management/leadership for the airlines # 1, and LARGEST city, is it a fair question to ask;

"Will The #### hit the fan"(sick calls), this holiday season in Philadelphia ??????????????

NH/BB's

I had a great KPHL experience other nite----turned off on short highspeed--our gate was occupied C-29--and was staring at lengthly taxi back to wait on gate---C-27 was empty--quick shout to ramp freq and ground ctrl and ramp commander says YAA NEW GATE !! C-27 Right in and rampers and parker werent too long getting there either ! Great stuff can happen. However we did catch em between pushes.
