Parker set to make Important Announcement on 9 June 2015

I got this from a poster on flyerTalk.------------ MIA-JNB is 7005 nm, which is what aircraft range is often designated in. The 777-200ER range is 7,700 nautical miles, 777-300ER is 7,930 nautical miles. (The 777-200LR range is a whopping 9,380 nautical miles; AA does not have any plans for any of these.)

For comparison, the 747-400 (previously used by South African for ATL and JFK to JNB) is 7,260 nm.

Eastbound it should not be a major problem, westbound against prevailing headwinds cold get challenging at times and possibly require a technical stop (unless AA wishes to impose useful load / weight limitations on the aircraft).

Perhaps if AA announced MIA to JNB or from some other AA city options are there in equipment type. The 787 has range and USAir has A350's on order. They have range as well.

Several more common anti-AA arguments will crumble today ...

because AA announces a new route?

probably not.

the only thing that will change with the announcement is that AA will become a 5 continent airline IF they announce either JNB or SYD on their own metal or other Africa/Australia flights.

the issue with JNB is not range but altitude since JNB sits at over 6000 feet. it is doubtful that the 772ER could take off from JNB to the US without a significant payload penalty.  AA has not uprated its Trent 890s to the max available.

DL's ATL-JNB route is the only route of that length that operates without payload restriction on most days from JNB but one of the pilot participants on this board who has flown that flight for DL says that for takeoffs from JNB DL regularly uses the increased thrust of the GE engines which is normally used only on the 773ER but which DL is authorized to use on certain routes. Thus, DL is taking off using the 773ER's thrust while flying the smaller 772LR.

Given that MIA-JNB is shorter than ATL and AA's 773ERs have very few additional seats compared to DL's 772LRs, it is possible that the heavier 773ER could work on JNB-MIA given the shorter distance.

Keep in mind that if it is JNB that is announced, it will likely be S. African that is hurt the most since they cannot operate nonstop in both directions on a year round basis.

Unless it is AA's own metal into Australia (including from BFL or FAT) where it will be presumed that AA is working within the context of its own JV, additions to other markets including to Asia outside of trading capacity within a JV will likely result in additions of competitive capacity in equally strategic markets.

It could be east coast to S Africa and west coast to Australia.

After the American Air twitter team sent out the picture of the baby kangaroo, SYD is very likely.

'Cause they already know that the majority of Tulsans are already whooped pups and are used to being in the dark (whether it be from AA/TWU or the IAM.) How many "BIG" BS announcements does this make? 90% of the BIG announcements are all in triads (AA/TWU/IAM) favor anyhow. Could it be that all mighty DP had a vision and is now going to give M&E a 4% raise?. Pffffff
Also when Parker was here he said "Wait a year and things will be better."  It's been a year and things in Tulsa are worse.  It's more like a prison now then it was a year ago.  So I am guessing he won't be back until the contract is done.  Just my guess.

Not stirring the pot here, but what examples of change in TUL have occurred?

We went from a limited C/S policy to a nonexistent one to the current C/S policy that fits the line stations but not Tulsa.  AA expects us to take vacation time for doctor appointments as well as watching the gate times like a hawk.  Anyone outside the gate for more than 30 minutes is fired.  I remember when AA told the TWU that gate times would not be used for discipline purposes.  Basically when you are at work you are on lockdown.  We have a little bit of flexibility but now there is none.  I would consider this worse than what we had.
