Non-reved on Airtran the other day. Mostly slept, but an announcement got my attention. "Beer and wine are available for 5$, payable by credit card only". I'm not sure if it was the mention of beer that caught my ear, or the words "payable by credit card". Why does't AA do this? I can see where it would be really valuable capturing additional revenue in flight. Just think, mid flight up grades to get away from that screaming baby. Or, middle seat in the last row guy... Sir/Ma'am, we have a first class seat available for just 50$...

Yep. It's already on the way, and in addition to added revenue, there's finally a way of reducing the temptation to use liquor revenue as the Layover Fund...

Yes, they're on the way. I got to see one at APFA last month and they're pretty cool. They will have lots of options for products to sell. These are just some of them:
  • Beer and Wine - $6.00
  • Headsets - $2.00
  • Snack Boxes - $4.00
  • Soda - Still making decision
  • Pillows/Blankets - Still making decision
All flight attendants will be receiving a new AA ID that you will use to sign on to the handheld device.

SIX dollars for beer or wine? Not the current $5?

Oh, well. Guess AA has to pay for these devices somehow.

Yeah, I know. Hip, trendy bars charge a lot more than $5 or $6. But then again, coach ain't no hip, trendy bar, either.

Hey, now! There's a cost to getting the privilege of seeing us 60 year old flight attendants working the aisles, and the tickets ain't covering that cost.

Yes, $6 bucks for beer and wine. Mini's will also be $6 bucks! They're looking at charging for soda!! A combo pack is being looked at to include a pillow, blanket and headset for $4 bucks. The problem I see with that is...Who gets the pillow and blanket at the end of the flight? AA or the pax?

It's just like the headsets -- the customer keeps it. The samples I've seen come in a cloth carry-sack just like the old amenity kits did.

I was told the other day that those blankets are exspensive because they are fire retardent. Could they cost more than 4 dollars???
Just qurious

Don't know about the cost, but they are required to be fire retardant. But, that just involves treating them with a fire retardant chemical. IIRC, baby clothes are required to have the same treatment.

I have a feeling though that if we start selling them, they will be smaller than they are now. Then, that will mean people will start bringing their own blankets (they are already bringing their own pillows--full-size bed pillows). More stuff to take up space in the o/h bins.

And, there is the issue of where to store the "retail goods" on the plane. Maybe they should re-visit having a kiosk in the waiting areas near the gates which offer food and amenities. It's not like I'm setting up my retirement with my B.O.B. commissions.

On BOB flights I get out in the aisle and market those boxes. My last paycheck, I had about $15.00 taxable dollars in commissions (at last, Mother can have that operation! )

It's official regarding the new AA Cre ID's. This was an HI6 message:

We are planning a phased rollout of a device that will capture all onboard sales transactions or Onboard Sales Recorder that will begin in the spring of 2006.

To facilitate the rollout of this device, we will be reissuing crew ID badges. The new crew ID badge will have a magnetic stripe that will allow flight attendants to swipe their ID card for easy log on to the OSR. Flight attendants also will be able to use the new crew IDs at self-service machines to check in for business and personal travel.

New crew ID badges must be picked up by March 17, 2006. Each base will communicate the specific times and locations for obtaining the new ID badges. Your current ID badge must be turned in when you pick up your new ID badge.

I have seen some nasty ass full sized pillows over here at the US. Makes our pillows look almost clean. :D
