Look, BD, I truly am about as 'middle of the road' as they come...I am a liberal democrat....which translates today as being self-reliant. Self-reliance and relying on government only when absolutely necessary. The religion thing is a conundrum...seperation of church and state...you seem to be willing to amend the constitution to protect your family from me and save the world...let us consider amending it in other ways....Women, nows your chance. Not really. If you figure in the dollars that get poured into infrastructure, for both air and rail, you'll see that rail is cheaper.

It's a bit dated, but in 1994, total public spending on rail was $855M. That includes federal and state funding.

Total public spending for aviation in 1994 was $17.686B.

And that's 10 years ago. Since then, aviation's subsidies have steadily increased, especially with the formation of the TSA, the ATSB, and looking ahead, the PBGC's inevitable bailout thanks in part to US and UA's pensions being terminated.

Actually, from a statistical standpoint, the infrequency/ difficulty of hetro transmission combined with the significantly lower lifetime partner numbers for the hetero populace vs the gay male would have led to the virus dying out long before it reached "critical mass". but actually, a monogamous relationship with a non-drug user is one safe bet. I'll voluntarily restrict myself to that lifestyle.

What were the tax revenues from Air travel vs train, how many revenue pax miles did trains operate, and then what were the "subsidies" per mile for each industry? and that's before we factor in the lost productivity from a long trip riding the rails.
