All this disussion is well and good, but aternative fuels need to be found and put into place NOW. Whoops, that would mean less profits for oil companies....Also if you are alone, in an SUV, big ol' honkin truck and doing 85 mph down the freeway, you have no right to b*tch about the price of gas.

Busdrvr, if LIBERAL means NOT marring your sister then you can call me that all day. Inbred rightwingers pretending to be CONSERVATIVES wouldn't know the meaning of liberal. Hope you voted for the man that will soon put your airline and you out of business. Gosh, I love that word LIBERAL, you just remember that you will need those liberal benefits when you are looking for a job. And hold on to your little guns so the boogie man doesn't come and getcha. It says so much about a little man that needs a gun to make himself feel safe.

Regarding the difference in the cost of gas in different parts of the country -- a huge reason for the difference at the retail level is the amount of taxes the states or municipalities tack on to each gallon. States like California and cities like Chicago tack on huge amounts.

I remember when either the state of IL or the city of Chicago increased jet fuel taxes a huge amount several years ago in order to increase revenue. All this did was cause the airlines to tanker in loads of fuel.....and the net revenue for Chicago went down because of it. Of course then some politician wanted to figure a way to tax the tankered fuel.....

And lest we forget about medicad and medicare when our fine busdriver retires....hum, isn't this a LIBERAL big spending program created and or inspired by one of those LIBERAL presidents?. I bet there isn't a CONSERVATIVE around that would be willing to forego THAT benefit. Oh, the hypocrisy!

OMG....I can hear the wheels in old Doc Bronners head spinning now! We've already got pleanty of BS, just gotta figure out where to put it all.

Conservative= a liberal who has been mugged.

I'll be glad when oil hits $60 per barrel so that my Exxon stock will be worth more.
I love gas guzzling SUV's and I smile every time I see one being purchased. I saw some people today test driving a new black Hummer and it was a beautiful thing!

When I worked in Texas and the last time gas prices were high, it took me $20 to fill up my car. I used to love it when the SUV with the Bush bumper sticker at the adjacent pump read $60 to fill up that SUV .

Yeah. And all those gas guzzlin' airliners flying routes less than 500 miles need to be replaced with high-speed electric trains.

Whoops. That would also mean less jobs in the airline industry.....

I find it funny that people question why gas is cheaper in Texas and Oklahoma.

Try lower gas taxes, coupled with the fact that Gulf fuel prices are always lower than what you see on the east or west coast for the same reason lumber is always cheaper when you're near the forests....

For those who don't get it -- the cost of transporting oil across the Gulf from Mexico or South America is always going to be less than what it takes to bring it in from the North Sea, Persian Gulf, etc.

Plus, there's more refining capability in the Gulf region -- I'm told that most of what's brought into the west/east coast ports is refined elsewhere, so that increases the cost since you're paying for finished product as opposed to raw material.

Trains?

Now that is funny, Amtrak has sucked up more of your tax dollars to support it then any airline.

Good point..........where is the outcry about all of the federal dollars they recieve? I hear so many people complain about all the bailout money for the airlines and how is shouldn't be. They complain and then refuse to buy a roundtrip transcon ticket unless it is lower than $200. Isn't Amtrak one of our biggest competitors on the East Coast??????

California is the fourth largest oil-producing area in the United States, behind Federal Offshore production, Texas and Alaska. In 2002, the total receipts to refineries of roughly 661 million barrels came from in-state oil production (48%), combined with oil from Alaska (22%) and foreign sources (30%).

California is a major refining center for West Coast petroleum markets with combined crude oil distillation capacity totaling more than 1.9 million barrels per day, ranking the state third highest in the nation. California ranks 1st in the U.S. in gasoline consumption and 2nd in jet fuel consumption.

A large network of crude oil pipelines connect producing areas with refineries that are located in the San Francisco Bay area, Los Angeles area and the Central Valley. Major ports in northern and southern California receive Alaska North Slope and foreign crude oil for processing in many of the state's 21 refineries.

The Airline industry is the MOST TAXED industry in the U.S economy. So you see, we give far more than we recieve. Trains are a great idea. They once ruled as the nation's transport. Bullet Trains will come online around 2020 linking every major city in California. It would suit most Californians just fine if we could separate from the rest of the U.S. The national economy needs us FAR MORE than what we get from Washington. As far as these so called " Conservatives" are concerned, I would be embarrassed, and OFFENDED to be called one. Most are repressed, closeted, sex obsessed, hypocrits with a LONG LIST of fallen, bible quoting, gun loving losers. Let's add this up: lovers of big SUVs/ GUNS, usually equal' guys with very small appendages and egos, easily intimidated by real men, and intelligent women. Now that's something to laugh about.

'Let's add this up: lovers of big SUVs/ GUNS, usually equal' guys with very small appendages and egos, easily intimidated by real men, and intelligent women."

Seen your share of male appendages have you?

As to the red states and 'marrying your step sister', I've got to say that's real clever from a liberal where the 'ideal' is one man looking at another man's hairy @ss and finding love.... i guess a man marrying the step brother is progressive liberalism, just not the step sister.

but to SUV's, what percent of U.S. crude oil consumption is due to "suv's"? do you even know? Or is it just the liberal dogma? Of course those that decry the building of U.S. made SUV's that also provide union jobs, have no issue jumping on "the flying squirrel" to one of the many heated and cooled mansions around the country on a moments whim. Funny, my big @ss SUV gets better gas milage and polutes much less than the 70's vintage oil burning Volvo half the left tools around in. and it was made here, by U.S. union workers.

Busdrvr: "Seen your share of male appendages have you?" Not as many as you have from the looks of your worn out knee pads. There is a slang term befitting one (like yourself)who spends an inordinate amount of time in service on his knees in front of another man Busdrvr: "'ideal' is one man looking at another man's hairy @ss and finding love" How interesting that is your first thought of response? A Freudian slip? Much can be interpreted from your response. It appears as a classic response from a man fascinated by certain parts of the male anatomy, but is unable to come to terms with his attraction. I think it is a wonderful thing to allow adults like yourself to live in a loving relationship. A support system would do much to improve your self esteem.

North by Northwest....dude, your intelligence is being wasted here especially in the very entertaining debate with the yahoo....Guns, God and Gays, brother. Thats all their little minds can comprehend. Guns, to protect them from the 'new' "Boogey-man" and God to explain it all irrationally when their limited abililty for rational thought is exhausted. Ex-U here. One of the perverts who 'helped' elect whack-job Walker. My partner is the Cheif of Plastic Surgery for Kaiser Foundation Hospitals. I'm getting ready to enter a Masters program in Health Care. We own a 2br condo in SF worth about 1.2. Had the foresight to buy some rentals to provide us with income in the future. Money is not really an issue for us. UAL's MP program tanking would be troublesome though. So, having the time and desire to think clearly about this all, I have come up with my own reading of the tea leaves: Here goes...1. We will never not be at war again. 2. The wars will ONLY be about OIL with religion rearing its ugly head somewhere down the road. 3. I will not be around when it (IE: the frantic and horrific end-game to secure the most energy) comes to a head, but my neices and nephews who will soon begin to produce the humans that will have to (read: selective service) to fight it. I cannot not care about the state of this entire planet we've been given to steward. It just seems like we are headed in the wrong direction. I dont really need to recycle, but I do. I don't really need to drive a hybrid, but I do. I don't really need to go back to school and find a second career, but I am. These people are somewhat hopeless...and I understand that...but I hope they keep having boy babies so we have someone to fight the coming disaster. So, readers, bring it on....the insults, the 'I see through you's', the 'Rot in hell's'....I am fortunate...Partner who cherishes me, we both are negative, we both will live long lives....why do I care about the guy who says..."you perverts on the coasts".....because he might say it to some kid who has no support and then goes out and exhibits behaviour that puts him/her at risk.

Shouldn't we, as a race of humans, be seeking alternative answers to the problems that face us?

Peace, Patrick
