no ties for f/a's

 I for one am thrilled, and grateful to our uniform committee for once again securing the no tie option for the hot summer months....specially out here in the desert! I have always taken pride in the way I wear my uniform, with or without a tie, or jacket. So, in the summertime we look like pursers on the love boat without a tie. Who cares!!! As long as your shirt is pressed, and only the top button open, you still look professional...and most importantly...comfortable. Anyways, since we are going to a business casual uniform eventually, we might as well get used to it now.
What about TransAtlantic flights.....tie or no tie? Well, we are already laughed at in Europe because NOBODY wears the right uniform pieces....ie., jackets!

Dear Members,
- Update Express-

You're free! You're free! At last you are finally free or at least through October. The following statement has been issued from US Airways management:

Date: May 01, 2006

Subject: Seasonal Uniform Modifications (Ties)

Effective immediately, Flight Attendant neckwear/ties are optional. All neckwear/ties all optional through October 30, 2006 (date coincides with wearing jackets).

When the uniform shirt is worn without a tie, ONLY the top button of the shirt may be unbuttoned.

All other uniform policies remain the same.

Ok, so there it is. Just because you have something to show does not mean you have been given the green light to show it. This applies to women as well as the men. Thank you all in advance for keeping to the policy that has been prescribed.

As some of you may know, this policy was provided to America West Flight Attendants last year. Although the two Flight Attendant groups are still working under two different uniform policies, our appreciation goes out to Robin Walter and Bob Spinner, America West MEC Uniform co-chairs, for including the East Flight Attendants in their proposed request for this seasonal uniform change. If you would like to express your gratitude and I am sure many of you would send them a thank you at [email protected].

That is all for now. Look for a new "From the Hanger" coming at you later in the month with an update for the NEW US Airways Uniform.

Fly Fast and Fly Safe

With all due respect to everyone who loves this idea and the uniform committee. This is not a good thing. Yea it feels great, it's liberating, it's cooler, everyone hates a tie on, but it looks terrible. Most of you agree the aviator shirt is NOT the shirt for this look. I'm disappointed that the uniform committee even considers this look to be appropriate and also with management. Last summer we saw many people that wore this relaxed look pretty nicely, but for the most part....the sloppy ones that looked bad with ties..always looked even sloppier without the tie. To top it off, America West still has a pinstriped uniform shirt out there that can be worn without the tie and it looks even worse, complete with yellow armpit stains.

For those people that take pride in their personal appearance (and you know who you are) they will wear this look ok. For the others....get ready, the top button only...doesn't happen. It's great to dream that people can take care of themselves, look clean, well groomed, pressed, but the reality is..those days are over. We need a uniform that is designed to be worn without the tie before we shed the ties.

99% of the passengers don't give a hoot about what any crew member wears or what they look like anymore. It's strictly the fares stupid. If the airline cared, we wouldn't have to BEG for uniform pieces even though they are thread bare and yellow pit stained. If the airline wants the uniformed pressed, give me back my measly $20 dry cleaning allowance.

Let's start a survey on this or another thread. Would you pay more for your tickets to see the crew in new or better uniforms?

With any group there are always those that just don't take the time to look good. I just flew with a fella that is a nice as can be, but that shirt was constantly coming outt of his shirt and every day the next shirt was as wrinkled as the next. I doubt he took a moment to iron his shirt. AND HE WORE A TIE!!

Some have told me that they are doing as little as possible anymore because just don't care. I know, great attitude.

For those that DO care about how you look, a few tips...

1. Iron/Starch the shirt inside out. It looks sharper and there is no shiny hue from the starch.

2. Iron the neck line as well..preferably with starch...so that the openned part of the shirt is a V and stiff. This gives a sharper look.

3. Wear an undershirt!! I know many are hot natured, but an undershirt preserves the integrety of those cheap shirts and prevents the yellow staining. Also, any man with hair on his chest should cover up.

Most of you know these things, but just in case, these will help you look sharp with or withOUT the tie. ;)

I'll take your ridiculous response and respond to it.

You're right, pax don't decide whether or not to fly a carrier based on how the crew or ground agents look in uniform. However, once they are there, they notice. I've been in this business for a very long time and joined when it was a privlege to work for an airline, you either had to be really great or know somebody to get in. Appearance was critical at this time and when you go through training now...appearance is still critical. Looks and appearance or two different things. Believe me, as someone who is always well groomed and professional, I definitely notice the unkept ones...and how they respond to passengers and crew. And believe me, this aviator shirt is simply not designed to be worn without a tie so when it is worn without a tie...it is criticial to take it serious and wear it well or you are simply presenting yourself to the public as a slob.

I have over 25 years. Yes, my skin was flawless as was my teeth, weight, etc. which was required back then. However, the passenger was also wealthier and well dressed. You never saw sweat pants and t-shirts in first class. UGH! Times have changed. We have to work multiple cabins dealing with people who think they are at an all inclusive resort. I feel sorry for the few biz people left who have to deal with this as well. But back on the subject, no one, i repeat no one will PaY for a better uniform. Quite frankly, i don't care what anyone wears at the stores I shop at. I've grown use to piercings and tatoos. As long as I get what I need from a friendly person at a great price, I walk out happy.

As far as pressing the shirts, I've destoyed many at hotel with cheap dirty irons if we are lucky enough not to stay at a dump that even has one.

Your right on the money on this issue.

Well, maybe for Domestic flights the no tie option works OK....but I still think on International flights we should still wear our ties and look a little more professional! ;)

Agreed! I'm a Domestic Diva, so the tie is history. ;) :)

The only thing that damn tie is good for is a bomb stack. LOL. The slobs need to be weeded out and told to shape up. If your grown and don't know how to keep yourself groomed ya have issues deeper than not knowing how to iron. On one hand we hear that it's public transportation and we have changed over the years to mass transit in the air, yet we still want to look like gals of yesteryears. I don't need to look nostalgic and have a 70's tie to look professional. If the aviator shirt is pressed and looks crisp, who is to say "it wasn't meant to be worn that way". Says who? THAT is an opinion. I know it has been said before and I know he doesn't serve food/drinks but our own CEO doesn't even wear a damn tie. The concorde doesn't fly anymore either. It is what it is. Just no sneakers and shorts. lol where's the picnic?
