My biggest mistake before leaving being furloughed from USAir was that I had mistaken loyalty and didnt use it. Work your balances towards 0 hours, ie. none. Use that time to look for work, go to school, or just toward making yourself ready for any contingency.

The sick call problem could be fixed in the near future because Flight Operations is discussing changing back to the more restrictive sick policy.

So you advocate a system that punishes a pilot for calling in sick and pressures he/she towards violating FAR's? How low do you want to stoop?

For the people who say employee shouldn't use sick leave, what do you think when the last paycheck bounces and workers are stuck for 2 weeks of work and don't get paid for it? I guess that just "Tough s**t" for workers. I'll bet Lakefield and his execs get full pay PAST the last day . . . . and the checks don't bounce.

The horse is dead. Dismount.

Leaving MHT for CLT today, called taxiing out to check on weight/balance info and were advised that the next leg (CLT-DFW w/same flt number - thru flt) was cancelled.

Once enroute, sent message to dispatcher asking what was up - we were booked for over 100 on a 737-300 (over 80% LF) and since it was a thru flight we were to keep the same plane (per the paperwork).

Message came back "No crew". After our amazement wore off - after all, we were the crew that was to take the plane we were flying on to DFW - we sent another message to dispatch saying exactly that.

Eventually, another message arrives - scheduling is taking my F/O to fly CLT-IND and has no replacement, so CLT-DFW is cancelled (as is the return in the morning that we were to fly).

So the other 4 of us - me and 3 F/A's - spend a long overnight and pick up the trip back in CLT tomorrow with the same F/O.

I have not called in sick for over two years. However if the company wishes to return to the Old "new policy" then the next time I am sick it will be a minimum of 42 hours and 31 min....Full pay for that month...a better idea would be for the company to accept the LAST PILOTS Offer...then we are on our way to PROFITS!!!

USA320Pilot comments: Where did I advocate anything? Last week US Airways’ vice president of flight operations Captain Ed Bular sent an internal email to all pilots discussing the recent spike in sick calls immediately following the bankruptcy filing. Bular said that if the excessive sick calls did not stop the company could return to the current contract language regarding sick calls. I simply the stated facts.

My position on this is simple: if a person is sock stay home and if a person is normal they should go to work. Sick time should not be used for additional vacation days and anybody who calls in sick and is not ill is dishonest.

I really believe you meant to say that if a person is well instead of normal. Normal isn't really the issue. ;)

Sick time has definitly spiked since the bantruptcy filing but consider the
following....record destruction due to huricanes, record rainfall and floods.
worst asthma and allergy situation in the eastern u.s. etc....how much stress
can you handle.
Some groups can t come to work on medication and shouldn t.

Yes there is some burning of time as well and the ones who are left are
being asked to do more each day. Such is human nature...some can take
more than others.

This isn t a new phenomenon. It has happened many times over the decades
and, if the airline survives, will happen again in times of distress.

Try to have patience and sympathy for your fellow worker..he or she may be
dealing with things that you can t comprehend.

regards
