Unfortunate you have that view of employee suggestions. At American we have a program called "IdeAAs that fly",and there is a 777 flying around that employee cost reduction suggestions paid for.

Even more remarkable, that aircraft was delivered pre 9/11,joining the 757 that employee cost saving suggestions paid for several years earlier.

You are right though, what do people who actually work in the operational side of the business know about useful cost saving ideas?
LGA Fleet Service,

USAir of old had a B757 that was procured via an "Ideas That Fly" program as well. The Acft even had that program slogan marked on the L/H Fwd side of the fuselage.

Sadly the program was dropped...and the Logo was discarded during the Wolfman's tenure...and drive to slap an old whore into a new dress sort of speak.

Sure changing our name...and sprucing up the livery to what I consider as being a very "Regal " scheme was nice...but the core issues of what's wrong with U were never ever addresed. ...and Ideas that fly....became an idea to profit and run...and leave it up to the next owner (UA at the time) to resolve.

U has had a history of failing to solve problems...or mask them. The idea of not seeing a problem or aknowledging a problem has always left the leadership with a false sense of success during a given groups tenure here.

The one constant in U's history...pre and post merger mania has been it's people...and thier collective will to provide safety and quality to it's customers. This regardless of the problems we have...and those being created by continued poor judgement will never change.

U is the only company I have ever been part of that blaims it's workforce for its ills..I learned in the military if something fails...it fails do to ill concieved planninig , logistical failures , or lack of foresight. This always falls on the shoulders of the leadership....an it always should !!!

The above I liken to my days as a Paratrooper in the Army. During my last couple of years in...I pushed myself to qualify as a "Master Parachutist"...in doing so I was often tasked to serve as the primary "Jumpmaster" on the given Acft. The rules for being a Jumpmaster were very clear and understood. The Jumpmaster can deligate authority...but never responsibility !!! Corporate leadership should be treated and tasked no differently if we are to survive?

....and a parting quote. Amatuers study tactics...Professionals study Logistics.

I like you just a bit more knowing that you are a former military man. Im an old submariner myself.

European expansion would be nice considering US Airways seems to be doing very well in Europe.

ITRADE,

I bet you are probably speaking of NUCOR. A great company, with people who enjoy working there, make very goodmoney, and don't have a union to "look after their best interests".

Markmywords,

Your statment: there are things that we need to spend money on in order to make money.

PITbull comments: If I am not mistaken, we discussed that very issue some time ago in the "negative air" post. At that time, you did not agree, and said we still had to reduce costs.

Glad to see you finally are approaching a 360 on that issue.
PitBull,

I know it seems I have changed my tone abit about spending money to make money, but it all depends on how much we are spending for what. Priority one should be to fix the image. Get the aircraft appearance standards back up to snuff. Second should be to redesign the first class product we offer. The important things to spend money on are the things that touch the customer and could possibly retain or increase sales and increase revenue.

:D

Mark,

My point exactly. WE are a "people business". The "product" is giving/providing "quality" to the customer...."spend a little money to make money". That is the essence of this business. Now, take those thoughts and explain it to senior mangement.

Yea ole 628 unions don't do a damn thing in this country, Yep, you're right, sure don't.....All employers take U's lead and treat their employees with respect, pay them a decent livable wage and health benefits, even make sure their mental health care needs are met with honest and open dialogue of the companies intentions and future business plans, make sure all share an equal and fair wage in that company executives are not paid 100 fold above what the employees earn but no less do the grunt work, and would never become millionaires while the employees suffer concessions and mental anguish worrying about their futures, and so much more I could say. Yep, unions are nothing but machines for people who would believe socialism is the answer ...Yep 628 sure are right on this one. I’m so glad you’re here to let us all see the light of day.

ITRADE,

What NUCOR is, is a very well run company that happens to have "GREAT" mangagement, and does very well inspite of a soft or robust economy. Gives their employees a fair livable wage, and when there is a downturn in the econcomy, everyone takes a concession from the top....down. Here is a company that has been around for eons. Did you know they have not had ANY layoffs? NONE. Know why? Their management doesn't believe in downsizing to profitability, and whould rather provide a 4-day work weak, then furlough.....

Folks enjoy working there because they have a fair-minded, trustworthy, management who cares about employee morale and spirit and knows how that one element can effect their "bottom line".

Cavalier...

Where did I say that unions served no purpose at all. Do not read into what I said, all I posted was the fact that there is a company in an industry that the US used to dominate (steel), that is prospering while so many others have gone belly up. Ask the retirees at Bethlehem Steel how good the USW was at protecting their medical benefits after that company filed Chapter 11.

Is management at U the same as at NUCOR? Not by a long shot. Have the unions at U and in the US done some good work? Absolutely. Do they share in the blame of the mess at U and other highly unionized industries? You betcha. The biggest advantage NUCOR has being non-union is an ability to change rapidly to the market place.

YEP...the executives fill their pockets with change rapidly by violating every contract they signed at U. YEP unions fault on that account too...YEP I agree again, right on 628. Unions at U are helping the ship sink, they gave nothing so the geniuses we have running U can only fill their pockets with not enough left over to pay the bills…Unions those damned unions!

N628,

Oh please, let's talk about NUCOR shall we......

Below is an incerpt from Last years Washington Post. Long article talking about comapnies that have succeeded even in "downturn" economies....Read on: (This is how real leaders behave)
