MDT loses mainline service

BTV will lose its mainline service as well on the same sked change. Replaced by RPL EMB-175, along with one CRJ rotation going to EMB-170.

Any other cities losing mainline flights?
Im going to miss BTV. Back in the day when we had lots of mainline service, it was probably my favourite summer/fall layover! Just such a beautiful New England town BTV is, with both the beautiful Lake and the rolling mountains as backdrops! Will miss it!

MDT, BTV, ABE, etc - All of these were cities that I thought would be perfect for the E190. Maybe once US stops losing planes, we'll see them come here.

Well considering we are only getting 11 this year dont expect much from the E190. Republic however will be flying 60 of the things. Oh, wait, I'm sorry, they have the E175. The Embraers we let them fly have 3 less rows which clearly makes it a 'regional jet' you dont have to employ a US Airways employee on. We should fly A320s and give the A319 to Express. I mean, the 319 has a few less seats and all so its a whole different ball game, right? Or maybe give them the 737-300 and we'll fly the 737-400.

You'll never see any of those cities again. We don't even fly to Houston anymore. Thats what happens when the unions at a mostly small narrowbody airline allow unlimited scope for its "partners" to fly small narrowbodies under its name without the bother of its own employees. Duuuh. But thats okay, I mean we might get two A340s.

My..are we the little drama queen today. <_<

Furthermore, the 190's aren't growth aircraft, they're actually a reduction in seats considering the retirement of approximately the same # of Boeings both this year and next.

That's a little rich coming from the king of negativity!

Drama Queen or Harsh Reality? I think it's the latter not the former. EMBFA has her finger on the pulse as usual. Don't knock her for stating the truth. ;)

Some people have a difficult time comprehending the truth. EMBFA was right on with it.

At one time US was trying to keep the MDT fares low in order to keep the local passengers from driving to BWI to fly SWA.....

Having grown up in MDT and having returned every year for the holidays and having family there continuously since the early 1970s, I can assure you that at no time was US trying to keep MDT fares low until a brief experiment perhaps 2 or 3 years ago. MDT-PIT was right up there with the pre-Southwest PIT-PHL fares. As was MDT-anywhere else.

Hey, you can still fly there on a Dash 8, CRJ, or EMB170. But you prefer your metal heavier, there is always UA. They recently added a mainline ORD-BTV flight. Or B6.

I know that marketing was doing something of the sort with MDT, and the "SWA" effect at BWI. The MDT schedule had more Mainline flights than ABE, and they also boarded a bit more each Month. I dug into this a bit deeper at one time, and was told that even with the higher boardings at MDT, that their revenues were much lower that those at ABE. This is where the SWA at BWI saga came from..Who knows....

Back when the Packers played the Patriots in the Super Bowl, I want to say Jan. 1997, I flew from RDG-PIT-LAS for the weekend on a fare of $198 RT. MDT had the same fare also at the time. I flew out friday night and returned on the red eye sunday night, after the super bowl. The air fares around then were matching what WN offered at BWI, MDT and RDG matched it. And it was generally where WN flew. Cities that WN didn't fly to, fares were alot higher.

This is a trend everywhere. In PIT, AA no longer flies there. It's all American Eagle. Imagine flying to DFW in a wind-up jet. The other legacy airlines have almost as many wind-up jets. The less seats there are, the more they are worth (at least theoretically).

This is the part of the puzzle/business that most consumers and uninformed employees DO NOT UNDERSTAND. FULL flights do not necessarily equate to PROFITABLE cities. It all comes down to YIELD.....what are they paying in relation to what does it cost to operate the segment. Yield Management is rather tricky. Southwest tends to flood a market with high frequencies to certain destinations but I am sure not all of their flights bring in much revenue, it just keeps the competition from being able to fight them in the trenches). Rather than completely pull down service, (Mainline as opposed to regional Partners), it seems like the best thing the legacy carriers SHOULD do in places like MDT, BTV, TUS etc is offer 2-3 Mainline jet flights and suppliment with 2-3 regional flights to keep a presence in these markets.JMO
