At present, the reason for it is that it is cheaper to do so than rely on our own known sources still in the ground. But my point is we now have the ability to do just that, which would be to extract that oil if need be. As for using the other guy's resources before our own, especially if it's economically prudent to do so, is just the obvious thing to do!
