Not if the Crew Member has had an extesive background check and security clearance performed; as we have had.
But an extensive criminal background check only checks prior, documented, convictions. A criminal background check does not determine your personal beliefs. You may have a spotless crimial record, but still hate America so much that your willing to blow up an airliner.

Coming into work this morning I heard on a radio talkshow host report that the UK is saying some of the 21 arrested may have been, or have associations with, aviation/airport employees.

In that case, crew members don't need a bottle of water...

The background check for crew and SIDA access cannot be described as "extensive" with a straight face. Ask anyone who has had any level of security clearance.

Very true. My next door neighbor is still waiting on his top secret clearance. It's been a year and a half. Anyone who has ever had contact with him has been interviewed.

US Airways senior director of flight operations Lyle Hogg sent the folliwng CBS message to all pilots at 8:38 a.m. EST, "All stations have been advised that previously mentioned security directive (liquid restriction in carry on bags) does not apply to uniformed crewmembers. We apprecaite your patience as we work through this process."

Regards,

USA320Pilot

Background checks are meaningless. Crew members are just as likely to be terrorist mules as multi-million mile middle-aged business travelers, and they aren't allowed any liquids either.
I guess we will all just have to call out sick...I won't go to work without my toothpaste! We do not have the luxury of checking our items. Ohh and you know if these so called Crew Memeber Terroist Mules also happen to be pilots...no Liquids would be needed to cause an incident! Crew Memebers should be exempt.

So where does it stop? Should we all just (pardon the pun) pack up and go home? No one can be trusted, security checks don't work, a bottle of Dasani is a leathal weapon.

If this keeps up for long, we're doomed. One of the main things I have always told customers is to keep their toiletries with them in their carry-on bags. If your checked luggage gets lost, then at least you have your toothbrush, etc. Knowing our reputation in getting checked luggage successfully to our customers, and we can hang it up.

A quick check of all airline websites and SURPRISE! Ours is the only one with no mention of today's events. Even jetBlue and Southwest have updates in red on their homepages.

Come on, its ONLY 815am now in Tempe. No one is even finished with their morning Starbucks there yet. The rest of the world cant be happening, can it?

There are mention of possible delays, but they say it is ATC delays. Nowhere else are delays mentioned OR the fact that customers need to check most carryon items with restricted articles.

I think Crew members should be exempt. I think where the real danger lies is with the many ground personnel that are on and around our aircraft and never go through any secutiry screening. That is where TSA should be focusing...
