From the Ask & Answer section of the American Airlines pilots' web site:

Leather Jacket

Q:Is it true that next winter AA Pilots will be able to wear a leather jacket instead of the current jacket?

A:It is with great pleasure that we announce that the APA and American Airlines have picked a premier vendor of vintage and current flight apparel to offer leather jackets for our flight crews. The black aviator style jackets will be optionally and individually purchased and full size lines will be made available for fitting at our DFW and ORD Flight Offices. The jackets will be authorized substitutes for the current suit jacket and are constructed of the highest grades of goatskin. We think that the finest aviators in the world deserve the finest uniform accessories. We will provide more details on ordering and availability ASAP.

Gee, I wonder what the pilots of Delta, United, Noethwest, US Air, Continental will have to say about the "finest pilots in world." Leather jackets, what about caps and boots and motorcycles? I'll bet there are going to be a lot of "swelled" heads over this.

Great news. It means that more loyal AA passengers will switch to UAL where the traditional suit jacket will still be worn, presenting a much more professional appearance. Really folks, the day of the leather jacket in the cockpit is gone.

Don't know about holster; but, I understand it does have a clip attached to carry their goggles.

Mechanics will be authorized to purchase their own vinyl jackets through payroll deduction.

Instead of wings over the breast, there will be a crossed wrench and pen.

Riiiiiight.Price has no impact on who people decide to fly, what the guys in the pointy end are wearing does...silly me.

In today's "Cheap Fares" mindset you could have the flight crew wearing bowling shirts and people wouldn't bat an eye.

As long as they pay $99.00, all is well.

ual,

I posted the excerpt, which I received from a trusted friend, to expose the AArrogance of the following sentence:

We think that the finest aviators in the world deserve the finest uniform accessories.

I doubt that the retro style uniform will have much affect on passenger loyalty. After all, don't Southwest's pilots wear leather jackets?

Thank you for helping to prove my point by perpetuating the AArrogance of the so called finest aviators in the world.

Nice dodge.

Is the statement any different from what any other airline would say of their pilot group? Including TWA?

Your type never seems to miss a beat. Slam AA at every opportunity. Sad.

Pilot's get leather jackets, while TWU members had to return half their uniforms!

Pilots MAY BUY their leather jacket for $300+ from a vendor desginated by
American Airlines. AA pilots have never gotten any uniform items paid for.

Nothing free given out, just the opportunity to look like a dork.

Southwest pilots have had leather "bomber" style jackets for years as standard issue. It doesn't seem to have hurt them too much.

What strikes me though, is this sentence:

"We think that the finest aviators in the world deserve the finest uniform accessories."

After all, "Aviator" is a trademarked TWA term!! I am an Aviator. That's what the members of the TWA Frequent Flyer program were called.
