Elvis told me the same thing when I spotted him at IHOP.

If we (and by we I mean not ME, I work at Wendy's) reduce capacity from the East to PHX or LAS the flights will be oversold by like 100. i wouldnt put it past them but I doubt if there are layoffs it will be due to reductions in and out of the East to the West routes. But I don't know much and probably just made zero sense.

And if you're a knowitall and you want to snap at me for not doing my homework or not being accurate in my assessment, I will flick a booger on you. :)

Rumors are going around that PIT ramp may see layoff packets handed out at the end of November for layoffs to take effect in January 2009.
Not sure how many will be cut.

The info they're giving in the investor update says mainline capacity for 2009 will be down 4-6% over 2008. Express capacity will be down 5-7%.

As far as fleet changes, this is quoted from the latest investor guidance:

This will be accomplished by returning six 737-300 aircraft by the end of 2008 (included in previous guidance) and four A320 aircraft in the first half of 2009; and canceling the deliveries of the two ILFC-leased aircraft which had been scheduled for early 2009. The airline is also planning to reduce additional aircraft in 2009 and 2010. In addition, the Company has one less 737-300 from previous guidance due to an accelerated lease expiration from 2Q09 to 3Q08.

Shannon. You should know better by now. High load factors do not necessarily translate into profitable routes. If the flights are oversold by 100, and even if we could theoretically squeeze thoe 100 onto the airplane anyway, if the flight still loses money then the service needs to be discontinued.

I suspect that, due to Southwest's extreme influence in the PHX and LAS markets, we are still operating flights that need load factors in excess of 100% to break even. The only reason we continue with that seeming absurdity is because it is a difficult decision to give up a market that may have future possibilities of profit. Regaining the market share you walk away from is extremely unlikely, so sometimes it is better to hang on to what you have and treat it as a "loss leader." But you can't have too many "loss leaders" because they can start to seriously cut into any money you make on the profitable routes which are subsidizing them.

AAAAAAAUUGH!!!!!!!!!!

Of course there will be layoffs.

If the past is any indication, the layoffs, if any, will be announced around Christmas time.

actually the airline is planning for a chapter 7 filing. they are looking for ways to make folks happy on this board.
