not trying to start rumors or anything but i just saw a northwest 757 parked at the hangar in phx. anyone know why it's there? do we do some maintenance for nwa when they breakdown in phx? just wondering.

I think the plane probably broke down in PHX and they are using the contract maintenance or hangar area for fixing. I'll ask my husband later and let you know

Didn't Northwest take some of US's 757's back in the late 90's or so -- I just have seen Northwest 757 with US tail numbers. Maybe it's nothing.

Wasn't there something back when the Airbuii started coming about NW having some of the tail number suffix's tied up, resulting in some of US' new planes having the "UW" instead of "US" suffix?

All of US' 757s use US, AU And one used VJ as NW owned the US designator before US aquired it from NW.

And no US Airways 757s went to NW.

Isn't it common practice if a plane breaks down and needs some sort of heavy unscheduled mntc to borrow someone elses facilities if you don't have any in that city? just asking? when I worked for AA in GSO I seem to remember an F-100 needing to go over to the US hanger for something but that was eons ago.

For the record, NW has long used the US suffix with its a/c registrations. I have super old B720 shots and old 727-100 pics all of which used the "NxxxxUS" formula for registrations.

Previous posters are correct that as USAir grew and brought in new fleet, they did run into more than a few series of numbers that NW had used previously.

Hangar space is not borrowed, it is leased.

Airlines often lease hangar space for a repair that needs to be done inside if the plane cant be ferried.

This is a pic of a UA plane in the CLT heavy Hangar as the plane broke in CLT and needed the gear to be fixed, UA flew in AMTs and fixed it in our hangar.

A mech once told me that the FAA requires all 'major' repairs to aircraft be done under a roof (hangar). Minor stuff can be performed under the open sky on the ramp, but the more involved stuff needs to be done indoors. I had never known that - just kinda took it for granted that the guys liked working indoors rather than out......

Its not in the hangar its parked on the side and has been for several days. It probably had a big MX issue. I belive we do work for them or maybe they send their own. Last year when a NWA had a smoke in the cabin that plane was parked at our hangar (on the outside) for almost 10 days.
