I would like your honest opinion

I don't live there, but I always here nice things about DFW area. Affordable housing, no state taxes, big city appeal, small city values. Something to think about. Not sure if we do our own maintenance there but I know we're pretty busy there, so I would think we do our own. Good Luck

If you are looking to make a career change, you may want to think about moving to Southern CA. The real estate market in the Inland Empire (about 30-60 miles or so East out of downtown Los Angeles) has dropped significantly, and we have all of the great weather without as much of the desert heat as in Phoenix. It still does get hot out there, but it is not as bad as Phoenix.

The real estate in West Los Angeles, the San Fernando Valley and the coastal areas -- while it has dropped a bit -- is still outrageous.

Texas is a good value, but they have an oppressive property tax structure in lieu of a state income tax. If you own a home, in many cases, you're worse off than if you lived in a state with an income tax. There's a lot of high-end rental property in the major cities of Texas for that very reason. The property taxes are lumped into home loans and, when you finish paying for the house, you continue to pay on it after you own it.

Each year, Texas assesses property values. After they're assessed, everyone files protests and tries to get their value reduced. It's a needless waste of government resources

For real waste, you could try California...oppressive property AND state income taxes and a bankrupt state government. It's not for everyone for sure!

I was in PHX this past June and am thinking of moving there after retirement. I found that their 108 was more comfortable than our 95 and humidity in CLT...It did reach 114 one day and that was unbearable, thank god for cold beer and a pool....and a/c.
Everyone looks at the temperature and over looks the humidity. The humidity in PHX is elevated half of July, and through August. The summer moonsoon season. It's 100 or higher from May to late September.

I'm 47 and have been here since I was 9. I can't stand the summers here anymore, but the eastern humidity is worse as far as I'm concerned. My personal preference is the Northwest. I'd commute if I could.

I'd recommend CLT.

There are those who would disagree but I think it's a nice city. And you don't have to reside in the city limits. There are small towns around Charlotte where you can live and still be within 30 to 40 mins. of the airport.

The city is growing and is having it's fair share of growing pains such as traffic snarls but they are being addressed.
And the schools have made big improvements. A good realtor will of course inform you of the best school districts.

Living in the piedmont area gives you a lot of choices for fun things to do also. You would only be within a few hours drive to the mountains or the beach. And I for one think The Great Smokey Mountains are the most beautiful ranges on the east coast. Carolina beaches are lovely also. Kitty Hawk and the Outer Banks are my favorite. But that's more than a few hrs drive. Any of the beaches here are great. And the nice thing is because the Gulf Stream runs so close to the coast so the water is warm and the fishing is great. ( I like to surf fish )
Boating is really big around here too because we have so many lakes and rivers.

And if you like Nascar, you'll be in hog heaven. ( not my cup of tea )

Come on down. The weather is great.

2008 Top Cities to Live

By choosing Phoenix you will never have to worry about black ice or cold weather...

My other observations:

- This city has to be the epicenter of dumb a___ anywhere
- It's the only city where I see multi car accidents on the freeway daily!
- Entire stretches of freeway will be closed for road work, but guess what NOBODY IS WORKING and that includes during the night hours!!! WTF
- Many people here are hard and quick tempered, unfriendly and uneducated.
- Stripper club mentality
- You will probably not find another city environment in which a hugely amazing number of people drive pick up trucks or their close relative SUVs. Mostly pick up trucks.
- Horrible drivers.
- Have you tried driving into the airport, or better yet out of it?? It's like walking in the heat and your delirious or something...switchbacks, unclear signage, no signage, roadways that take you the long way when there are shorter more efficient ways to go...oh and best of all a underground metro station that will never be used. Great going folks! [sarcasm inteneded]
- Got Meth?
- seems like people like to drink here alot which is why the dui rules are so harsh, jail on the first go round...and that is for being buzzed just a little.

Definitely come and rent a place in an area you might like and see how that goes...I believe the population in Denver has a better education - this in turn, as a general rule, leads to more interesting things to do around this type of city because active minds actively seek stimulation. Check out the library in any city you are exploring...this will tell you alot about the people that reside there.

By all means, please take in my observations, but please do what is best for yourself/family

I enjoy my layovers in PHX. I am one of the few that still rents a car and floats down the salt river on a hot day. If you can stand the desert, PHX is your place. I love DEN though. The mountains are beautiful and the people are great. It's always nice working at the ski resorts part time for some extra cash and benefits too. I don't know what is the best for you position, but both places are decent choices. My friend from Lake Tahoe recently relocated to PHX and loves it. It is just what your preference is . Visit both and decide for yourself and your family.
Our beloved Scottsdale overnite is gone.... gone gone.... now we are in that POS in TEMPE....

Geez, now there’s a surprise! That was one of our nicest hotels. If the Valley Ho was still a threadbare Ramada, we would be back there in a heartbeat I bet. I liked that place, though.

I’ve spent more time in LAS and PHX than probably any other place, but just because I like visiting a place doesn’t mean I would want to live there. In the summer when there’s breeze it’s like pointing a hairdryer at you face.

I’ve had a home in Florida, but I got sick of the summers down there, but I can understand the appeal to somebody from the northeast. These days I enjoy the change of the seasons and I love snow, so DEN would be my choice. I even thought of being based there when the UA merger was announced 8 years ago.

Years ago on a cold snowy and dreary night, a woman turned to me and asked how I could live in that type of weather. She told me she moved to ctl and never looked back. And she went on and on about the weather and how she hated to be practically confined home for a good 5 months of the year. Since she kept bi#chin' about the weather, I didn't get a chance to tell her that I stay home whenever it gets near 90 and humid, with my air con blasting! If the ac isn't working at the airport, you're pretty much cooked!

God, I love the cold. I hate humidity. I am, a-hem, blessed to live in an artic tundra in the winter...snowy owls vacation here...and a tropical rainforest in the summer! Given the choice, I've learned to love winter. Given a choice, I would live in Iceland.

I've been driving in snow for years and love it. Practically no cars on the road. I've driven plows and worked snow removal in various departments of my employment. So I'm skilled at driving in the ice and snow. Like southern drivers in the snow, you tend to see the 'chicken' airlines that cancel due to snow. Amazingly it's not LCC, but US employees' favorite 'other' airline, C...!

Crime goes down during the winter season. There is plenty to do, even in a blizzard. I get mega-overtime in winter. Snowflakes are better than rain.

An airport sometimes feels like an Easy Bake Oven, I can't see living in a city that gets baked.

To each their own
