I have heard of an announcement coming soon about int flts.  It may be this month or next.  If it's this month, it may very well may be announced during the Q4 earnings release 1-23-14.  but some are saying it will be next month.  All rumors, but it is coming soon.  It could be that we will be taking over the AT int flts, or maybe it will be the start of Southwest very own international flts.  Good news either way.  Looking forward to the future announcements...

it will be a huge part of WN's future growth.

taking over FL's operations first seems most likely along with a few WN new routes from the east coast - followed by Texas later.

Aren't the new WN int'l stations supposed to have outsourced ground staff?

I don't the answer to that.  I will try to find out.  They may but I have not heard as of yet what they are going to do.

What stations does DL outsource, Int'l and Domestic?  What positions?  FlyerTalk seems to have this big surprise that DL has Red Coats in LHR.  Seems that as much pride DL has in serving so many flights into and out of LHR that they wouldn't outsourse such a high paying market.

the point is that WN is becoming just like nearly all global airlines that outsource some of its work....

The complexities of having WN employees in countries thruout Latin America is not one that makes a lot of sense... but the same thing can be said for other carriers in their int'l operations as well.

And sense you mention it, perhaps you can list the number of cities that are staffed by each of the legacy carriers above and below wing and let us know.

I'm guessing announcements will be made at the Message to the Field in Feb.
or maybe the Dallas MTTF in March. We'll see...  :)

Hi Sharon and swamt,
here are some comments from the LUV earnings conference call last week in case you haven't seen them.

"And the other point to reiterate right now is that, for purposes of 2014 in the way you're thinking about us, we're pretty much going to take the AirTran International route system and simply move it gradually into Southwest. That's not literally true, but at the same time, we're not anticipating any bold moves here with new international markets and a lot of additional capacity in 2014. I think this sets the stage once we get through 2014 and the final integration, get the Wright Amendment repealed, it sets the stage for us to think about doing more with international in 2015 and especially when the Houston Hobby international terminal comes online in late 2015. But what you see right now is pretty much what you should expect for 2014 in terms of that international footprint."

"We're going to have, from this point forward until we finish the integration, 10 to 15 more aircraft out of service than we normally would as one vivid example. So these are airplanes that have been pulled out of service to go through a physical conversion, either 737s into Southwest or 717s into Delta, and that is pretty inefficient. I mentioned in my opening remarks, just the ongoing inefficiency of managing 2 airlines. So there's a hangover for that. But the training cost associated with our flight crews is quite substantial. So not only do you have airplanes that have a higher number out of service, but you also have a lot of employees that are, in effect, not in revenue service."

---

"Well, just to recap what we've said so far. At least in recent times, the percentage of our route system that is "under development" is a very high. So I think we shared that it's 16% of our available seat miles. That is going to be sustained throughout this year. And then when we have the final retirement of AirTran and integration into Southwest, it'll actually step up. So you're going to see a lot of "optimization" taking place certainly this year. And then next year, we'll have a lot of opportunities that unfold, and Bob will have a lot of choices to make about where we might want to add new routes. But I think we're still in pretty heavy optimization mode, wouldn't you say, Bob?"

---

"One thing to point out with our capacity in 2015 is that we're going to have capacity growth next year, simply because you'll have a much higher percentage of aircraft out of nonproductive status. So even without adding any airplanes next year, we'll be able to add some capacity. And we'll have to factor that in to whatever choices that we want to make for next year."

Hatu thx for the link.
Jim thx for the wishes.

I guess I was wrong about Feb. it did come in Jan.  As most knew this was coming and do not look at it as big news, it is however, HUGE news for SWA.  July 1 will in fact be first intnl flt by SWA in it's history.  Been waiting long time to celebrate this news.

Hatu, again thx for the link.  I found something very interesting this morning.  An article written by Jack Fink, entitled "Southwest Airlines To Fly International"  In his article there is a blip, and I quote,  "Kelly said that International flights will be added to Dallas Love Field later this year"---  Honestly I believe this is a misprint as this is the only restriction that will remain after W/A is repealed.  However, could this be the part of the "big announcement"?   I know that it was mentioned long ago that never say never for intnl flts at Love Field.  It's the only article I have seen with that statement, so pretty sure it was a typo by the new reporter to the Dallas area.  Sure does sound good though.   Maybe Hatu could be so kind to provide a link to this article before it gets pulled or corrected...

Congrats to WN for this significant step in its expansion into the int'l arena.

Great to see your dreams becoming reality.

Southwest Airlines executives outlined the carrier’s plans to begin flying from the United States to international destinations this year. Here are some questions and answers:

Q. What international nonstop service can we expect from Southwest Airlines at Dallas Love Field?

A. None.

Q. Why not?

A. The 2006 compromise that ends the Wright amendment restrictions at Love Field included a prohibition on any nonstop flights from Dallas to international destinations.

Q. So Southwest customers cannot fly internationally out of Dallas Love Field?

A. They can. The 2006 changes did not prohibit through-ticketing. But passengers will have to go through an intermediate U.S. city.

This weekend, WN implemented the first portions of the new Amadeus solution which will support all international, including eCommerce and inventory management. They'll be introducing the airport systems closer to the July service start.
