In case you missed in in the video, it's the part where he fondly reminisces about "back then". They are fed a steady diet of 'punch them in the mouth"..then they hear the toned down 'never give up', "never concede' and the other rhetoric, it's kind of easy to see how they might have "misinterpretted" what he said.
