fear US Airways union
A rumored merger of Virginia-based US Airways and the smaller America West of Arizona has workers at the smaller carrier on pins and needles.
America West employs more than 10,000 people in the Phoenix area, and many of them are nervous about merging their company with such a weak entity as the bankrupt US Airways, the nation's seventh-largest airline, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Tuesday.
"We feel like US Airways is on its last leg," one America West pilot said.
He and other workers at America West, the nation's eighth largest carrier, also fear a merger with US Airways will mean layoffs and lengthy disputes about seniority, pay and jobs as staffs are blended and diminished.
If the combination happens, it would result in the nation's sixth largest airline.
