The most common number thrown out there is 12000. In fact there are far fewer AMTs at AA. The actual number is closer to 6000 including O/H.

So you made a thread asking a question then answered your own question?

You must have had one hell of a Saturday night.

There are approx 7600-7700 title I mechanics at AA. That's about 1800 less than when I left beginning of 2013.

About 5,500 AMTs, 825 AMT CC, 450 INSP, and 700 OSMs. 4,100 of those groups work in TUL, AFW, and DWH.

7,650 total

AMT Crew Chief
So I'm guessing that a Crew Chief is more like a lead? (Ie not a management spot like a foreman)

Title 2 is ground maintenence and facility maintenance. And yes a crew chief is a union lead man.

Okay so is title 1 the only people who fix airplanes then?

Title 1 are the only ones that fix airplanes.  There were a couple small stations that had a auto mechanic (title 2) that had an A&P - that when called on, would help out.   As for avionics, at class one stations like DFW, ORD, MIA etc. there is a separate avionics group.  At class two cities like: MCO, PHX, SEA etc.  the AMTs do both general and avionics.
