Flight Attendant Charged In Bomb Threat

AAStew said:
Okay, I am going to play devil's advocate here. I do not condone what she is accused of doing and I will presume her innocent until proven otherwise.
BUT, haven't any of you ever been on a trip you could not get rid of, and somwhere in the back of your mind thought, I should call in a threat to get rid of it?
Before I get crucified, it is only a fleeting thought, but maybe this poor deranged woman just thought about it just a little too long?
Personally, I think she should plead temporary insanity, or maybe restructuring induced insanity, or airline induced insanity.....the list is endless.
NO. In all my years I have never, ever thought of, or considered something so spectacularly stupid. And to even suggest that this is some sort of common thought process among you AAers is not real confidence inspiring.

If she tries the "Twinkie" defense--remember the flight attendant who did something stupid like this and tried to claim that it was from eating too much sugar?--I hope they laugh her all the way to the Federal pen for a long, long time.

There is no defense for what she did. Think of the poor crew--which I understand performed admirably--who were having to do their jobs preparing the passengers while thinking that they might never see their families again. Think of the passengers who were thinking same, or were thinking that this would be their last trip on AA.

This joker probably had used all her sick leave for trivial purposes and had just run out of ways not to go to work.

But, don't get me started. :angry:

AA Stew:

Your posting cracked me up! I could totally relate. I will admit it. In brainstorming all of the ways to get out of a trip that I did not want to fly, the thought had crossed my mind...mind you, it was a very fleeting thought. Certainly would never have acted upon it. I guess we UALers and you AAers share the same demonic thought processes...we'll never measure up to those saintly TWAers...

Thanks for the good laugh...

I believe the twinkie defense originated in SFO. If memory serves me, someone got pissed off and walked in to an government office building and killed two officials. His shister (sp) lawyer proceeded to argue that he had just eaten a twinkie and the sugar rush effected his sanity. What a load of BS. I do not know the exact details but I am pretty sure that is the jist of it.

I have to agree with TransWorldOne - something like that NEVER even entered my mind.

I just wondered the real reason she tried something like that. However, my heart goes out to her. She did something stupid and now she will be crucified by some. I hope somewhere that she can find peace from it and a "learning experience". And I am glad that her family is standing by her. I will not cut her down, nor make fun of her - cause she is a hurting human being right now.

And med whatever read my post before you start ranting...no it would never cross my mind to actually do this, but yes I would say alot of us have had those fleeting thoughts! Get over yourselves people!

Garfield,

You have every right to criticize the outcome of the Dan White trial - I did at the time and I was already a practicing criminal defense lawyer. However, if you don't know the details, are not familiar with the law and don't understand the concept of diminished capacity, don't blame it on the defense lawyers by calling them shysters. This case was aggressively prosecuted by very competent and experienced prosecutors, and presided over by a judge who made sure that only admissible evidence could be introduced and proper legal arguments be presented to the jury. It was a battle of psychiatric and psychological experts. Twelve jurors, acting as the conscious of the community, unanimously accepted the defense.

Why don't you read the following article and enlighten yourself a bit:

Disgraced former supervisor Dan White committed suicide in the garage of this Excelsior District home after a failed attempt to return to a normal life upon his release from prison for the 1978 murders of Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk. The suicide in 1985 was the final chapter of the tragic assassinations that changed San Francisco forever.

In 1978, disgruntled White resigned from the Board of Supervisors, frustrated by the low salary - $9,600 a year - then paid to members of the board. Soon he had a change of heart and asked popular Mayor George Moscone to reappoint him to the position. Moscone said no. On the evening of November 27, White entered City Hall through a window on the lower level, north. (At the time, this area was a supervisors' parking area. Today, the window that White entered is now a door.) White, a former policeman and fireman, shot and killed Moscone and gay Supervisor Harvey Milk. San Franciscans were indescribably shocked when Board President Dianne Feinstein announced that the mayor and Milk had been killed and Dan White was the suspect. Feinstein was sworn in as the new mayor as the entire City mourned for leaders Moscone and Milk. On May 21 the following year, White was convicted of voluntary manslaughter. The jury accepted a diminished capacity defense based on testimony that White was suffering from untreated depression. In doing so, the jury rejected first degree murder charges. The so-called Twinkie defense is a widely accepted misinterpretation of White's diminished capacity argument. Even the San Francisco Chronicle reported that White claimed his mind was fogged by too much sugar on the night of the murders. In reality, White's new found junk food habit was offered as evidence of his depression, not as the cause of it. Outraged San Franciscans responded to the court's decision to slap White on the wrist for killings (7 year sentence) by rioting at City Hall, the "White Night Riot." White was paroled in 1984 after serving just five years and a little more than a month behind bars at Soledad Prison. In 1985 he returned to San Francisco despite a request by Feinstein for White, the most reviled man in the City's history, to stay away.

Unable to make a new life for himself nor to escape the impact of his crimes, White attached a garden hose to the exhaust pipe of the family car, a yellow 1970 Buick Le Sabre and took his life on the morning of October 21, 1985. White, who left suicide notes to members of his family, died clutching family photos. An Irish ballad, "The Town I Loved So Well," sounded from a cassette player inside the Le Sabre as White filled the car with carbon monoxide. The body was discovered by White's brother, Tom, at White's 150 Shawnee Avenue residence shortly before 2 p.m. the same day.

Notorious SF: Dan White

This Snopes.com "The Twinkie Defense" article may also help you understand that the defense lawyer never argued that White's judgment had been impaired due to his consumption of Twinkies and other junk foods.

yeah... yeah... yeah... same ol' same ol' AA vs. TWA CrAAP. Sorry, AAStew, you asked "BUT, haven't any of you ever been on a trip you could not get rid of, and somwhere in the back of your mind thought, I should call in a threat to get rid of it?" I replied, "NO, I have never...." You asked a question, I answered it. I stated the implication that this "so-called" fleeting thought idea of using a bomb threat simply to get out of a trip was less then confidence insipiring in those that might even think of that tactic. It was stomach turning to read that so-called professionals would even have fleeting thoughts of something so stupid. The manner in which you asked that question implied it was a widespread/discussed idea on your jumpseats. I never said anything about saintly-ness. And if Ms. Wilson had these and/or other types of destructive thoughts, before this spectacularly stupid career ending, freedom jeopardizing act, it is too bad someone didn't see the red flag and get her the help she sorely needs. Thanks for needlessly turning this into a TWA vs. AA spitting contest. If you didn't want anyone else's input, you should have phrased your question, "BUT, Haven't any of you non-furloughed, non-TWA types ever..."

Being saintly and working for a model airline (like TWA) has nothing to do with whether we are working or not. Sometimes it is because of the evil treatment of APFA union and lies by another company that determines who is flying or not.

I wouldn't boast about you working and we are not - at least until the court is over.
As you say - there is a saying in spanish "don't spit up in the air or it will fall back into your face."

I can't believe that you would even reply so nasty in response to TWA not working.
Like I have asked in other post - do they train AA f/a's to be so nasty to one another?

I am an outsider who happened to be perusing the American board. I happen to very much sympathize with the plight of former TWA flight attendants in how the seniority integration was handled. However, I will say in reading through this particular topic, your posting came off as a bit adversarial by making a comment such as "You AAers". The tone of your posting seemed to imply the "us vs. them" mentality and seemed a bit provocotive from my vantage point. I am not trying to take sides and do not mean any disrespect to you. It just appears to me that you cast the first stone.

What a dumba**! Did you see that mugshot of her in an AA uniform? She looked like she was high on drugs.

From 33000 to landing in 7 minutes. The Captain was TWA.

Good thing the bomb wasn't real . . . or altitude sensitive!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ol' Wing,
It could hardly be real if it didn't actually exist, now, could it.?
Your cute little roll-eyes and reference to "pressure sensitive" does not seem to be a consideration. You will remember that the aircraft had already reached a high altitude which would of necessity have caused the cabin and the cargo compartments to have a lower pressure than that existing at take-off.
The elevation of BNA airport is approx. 599 feet The destination airport has an elevation of 20 feet. HAD there been a pressure sensitive device onboard, it was NOT activated by the cabin pressure being REDUCED in the climb. Somehow I believe the good captain and crew took this into consideration and by not landing at an airport with a higher pressure than that which existed at take-off effectively removed the potential for activation of such a device.
Have you ever been a passenger (or a crew member) on a flight which received a bomb threat in flight?
Ever been on one when a passenger informs one of your hostesses that he actually placed a bomb on your plane? Ever had to go back and talk to a young man who is shaking, perspiring, unable to look at you and have him say; "Yes, I did put a bomb on this plane." Such an event and conversation actually did take place on one of my flights many years ago.
Fortunately, my F/as were able to move the gentleman to a forward area of the front cabin, out of view of passengers while I spoke with him. There was also a Doctor on board who overheard the original comment about the "bomb". He joined me and offered his opinion to me that the gentleman was schizophrenic and capable of doing just what he claimed to have done.
There was no airport to descend to in seven minutes, or that would have been my first choice. We were out in the middle of nowhere.
Other than the good doctor, my F/As and my other two pilots, no one else on the plane was aware of a problem until we parked at a remote area at the "nearest suitable" airport, which was ABQ.
What would you have done if you were flyin' that thing? (After changing your drawers).
Personally, I think Captain Toering did a TREMENDOUS job, and handled the situation perfectly.
I cannot believe that someone is actually emailing the following.
Dear Friends,
Why aren't we embracing Gay? Fighting for her?
Doesn't ANYONE see the opportunity here? To turn a negative into a positive. To show her that we will not let her fall by the wayside. That she matters!
This woman should be the "poster child" of what sleep deprivation and exhaustion cause.
She should be defended by this "so called" union of ours at ALL cost!
Use her desperate cry for sleep and attempt for help to be heard!.............................To thrust the unsafe working conditions into the media?
So far at the hands of the apfa we have 2 suicides, 1 arrest for prostitution, people on the streets, bankruptcies, and now 1 in jail for a bomb threat due directly to the working conditions that OUR union gave to the company . I am sure there are countless other unreported tragedies currently ongoing that we are unaware of.
Why is a secretary at the apfa headquarters being shown more compassion and support than ANY of the afore mentioned?
We need to embrace our ENTIRE membership!
You never know when it could be you or a dear friend?
Open your hearts, embrace them. Don't turn your backs on them and their families.
We must unite and throw away our hate!
We have SO much potential, I believe in each and everyone of us!
Together we can achieve our objective..........................
The time is now.............
We can't wait until the next one falls through the cracks..........
WE CAN DO THIS!
WE CAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is outrageous. The author of this email belongs in the same Federal Detention Center as Gay Wilson.
