1. The average teacher in Chicago currently earns $76,000 a year, well above the national average income of roughly $30,000 a year.

2. The Chicago school board offered teachers a 16 percent pay raise over the next four years, slightly more than previous offers.

3. "We are concerned that too much of the evaluations will be based on students' standardized test scores. This is no way to measure teacher effectiveness at all," said Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis Sunday night.

So just how "DO" we evaluate Teacher's doing "Their" job?

4. The Chicago school system faces a $667 million deficit this year, which will balloon to nearly $1 billion by next year !

5. After 10 months of contract negotiations came to an impasse over health benefits and teacher evaluations.

So let me get this straight ! Teachers don't want evaluations meaning, whether they do the job they get paid to do, they'll still get a paycheck !

And WTF? What's wrong with ObamaCare.............they did help get " Their Anointed One" elected............didn't they ?

Maybe everyone else is underpaid...

True, but remember we discussed this before; The Board wants to extend the both the school day & school year. Would you agree to work a couple extra hours a day for free?

By using a system that holds teachers accountable for things they can control; not the one Emmanuel wants to cram down their throats.

I'll take your word for it that those numbers are correct. With that said, the board got a 10 year holiday on pension funding. IOW, they were using the money elsewhere. Where'd it go?

BTW, while maybe not strike items per se, they are also seeking such "outrageous" items as working HVAC systems in many schools, and libraries.

Will be an interesting watch. HVAC systems working?? LOL If they can't repair them how can they afford more for teachers?

$0.73 of every $1.00 in new funding for education in Illinois has been going towards teacher retirement.

The state is bankrupt, financially and politically.

Well, how many hours do teachers work? Most people do 50 forty hour weeks and two weeks vacation. At least I do.

Firing an entire staff of Teachers is not even a workable idea much less a good one. This is what collective bargaining is folks. IMO The Mayor has to hold firm as he really can't do otherwise. Chicago & the state are so broke they can't pay attention. Sadly The Teachers Union needs to grasp that and get creative and find a way to get a workable contract.

What I suspect they're hoping for is some kind of pressure from Obama to exert some election year pressue on the Mayor as Mr Obama is well funded by Labor. Given the tax/debt structure of the state and ORD itself I'm thinking help is not on the way from Washington.

Not really. We can do what Ronnie did with PATCO.
Declare a national emergency and insert ARMY/NAVY/MARINE/AIRFORCE personnel instructors to the school system.
Keep their side arms for the more testy om brays.
A little 5:00 am PT would do wonders for these chillen... LOL

Anyone mention the Chicago Tribune 2010 investigation that showed some 40% of these teachers on strike send their children to private or charter schools?

Or the Chicago teachers union high mucky muck who invested his income into a charter school just as his daughter was ready for school?

Most of those teachers couldn't get hired at a charter or private school... they'd have to actually work.

"CRY Me a RIVER"..(that was an old song from long ago)..all you Union Haters.

First off, only an Imbecile would suggest firing "25,000" workers in such a vital position.
(Come to think of it, it WAS an IMBECILE Who made the suggestion) !

The Union must, and WILL be the LAST one to Blink. This in turn will send a STRONG message to Unions across the country to Grow a Pair of BALLS ! (Are you listening you TWU AMT's in Tulsa Okie-homa) ??

Maybe you should switch careers...

True, but it makes for a great soundbite, doesn't it?

Dunno. Did anyone mention that the largest donors by far to Emmanuel's mayoral campaign were charter school advocates?

How 'bout that teachers actually support lenghtening the school day. Just not the way Emmanuel wanted (20% more work in exchange for a 2% raise)?

How 'bout the poll this spring that showed the majority of parents polled "side the most" with the teachers, compared to just 17% siding with the mayor?

How 'bout Emmanuel's comments to the CTU president that "25% of the students in this city are never going to be anything, never amount to anything," and that he was never going to "throw money at them?"

Maybe you should switch careers...

Why switch? I love my job and get paid very well.

So, I still don't know how many hours a year a teacher works.

How 'bout firing all the striking teachers and replacing them with someone that can get better results.

This time there is precious little for the Mayor to work with. Chicago and the state of IL are in financial ruin. Think of them as the "Greece" of the US States. This is an undenialable fact. There is NO MONEY. Something has to give and no amount of singing Solidarity Forever is going to change the financial facts.

I'm not on here lambasting unions, however in this case the Chicago Teachers need to wake up and smell the coffee or at least demand to see the books.

People like Barry-O or New Hamshire Black BS or whatever he's calling himself this week and apparently the CTU, don't care whether or not the government is broke !

They have an unlimited bank account, that's financed by the tax-payer !

They already have the highest rate in the country !

Illinois
State Sales Tax Rate: 6.25%
Average Local Sales Tax Rate: 1.95%
Combined Rate: 8.20%
Illinois has one of the most complicated sales tax systems of all states, with more than 1,000 local taxing jurisdictions. Localities can charge as much as 5.25%, and Chicago has the highest combined sales tax of all cities in the United States at 9.6%. Illinois is also one of the few states that require sales taxes be imposed on online purchases even if the retailer has no presence in the state.
