no revision.  DL and NW both decided they wanted a different airline.  DL is different than it was before BK and the DL of today is not NW.

DL and WN both asserted firm control over their merger partners... HDQ and name stayed the same.  Both mergers are working far better than UA which tried to "split it it down the middle."  The jury is still out on AA but no one should be surprised to see some of the same labor problems there as have happened at UA.

Sorry to break it to you but NW is in the history books now - along with its labor unions and contentious labor environment.

figure out how to adapt and work where you have been planted, whether by choice or not.

You aren't the first person who ever had life happen unexpectedly to them.

I don't think Kev is caught up in what he considered the glory days of NWA and the IAM. Based on his posts he is focused on here and now, moving forward for DL and the broader labor movement. He can correct me if I'm wrong. I just wish he would get in a leadership role somehow, he really has a lot to offer but for whatever reason wants to keep with his bottom up philosophy and leave it to the powers that be.

Bingo.

Thanks, but IMO, the true power is on the shop floor.

of course Kev will say that is focused on the here and now but arguing for ethnic cleansing (where are the dead bodies and mass graves?) while denying the basic advantages which he has is enormously indicative of the fact that he does in fact want at DL what existed at NW.

Kev is stuck in time and can't adapt to the reality of a new DL in which unions aren't given a free pass but have to prove their value and DL employees by the tens of thousands have said unions haven't earned the right to represent its people.

If Kev was even 1/4 as influential at the workplace as he thinks he is on this forum, there would be tens of thousands of cards coming and an election would be scheduled yesterday.

There are no delusions of grandeur.

I want you to achieve your dreams.  Your dreams, however, are attached to the livelihoods of thousands of your coworkers.

The only way for you to achieve what you want is to convince them that your position is best for them.

They have to decide for themselves... and it is an ongoing process.

I respect your desire to do what you can and I commend you for standing up for your beliefs.

But given that Richard Anderson recently said that his goal post-merger was to ensure that DL remained with the same general non-union/union profile that it had before, it is hard for you to deny that he has achieved what he wanted to do, that DL has the resources to give employees what they want, and that the benefit that DL employees have relative to their own peers in the same workgroups - not pilots at the same company - is as strong as it has been in decades.

NW was a great airline.  So was Pan Am, TWA, and Western. etc

But they are gone.  Life moves on.  I totally get that you would have probably chosen a different path if you had known DL would absorb NW.

But life happens.  Fight for what you can achieve but don't be surprised if DL stays exactly the way it is WRT unions until the day you too walk out the door.  And I genuinely hope you CAN enjoy the days you have while you work for DL.

I do wonder though if DL did become organized if labor relations would be focused on progressive, mutually beneficial agreements (like WN historically) or more like UAL. Would the current climate with the pilots and dispatchers continue if more employees become organized?

"the true power is on the shop floor."

Herb Kelleher over at SWA was speaking about corportate culture and the state of employee moral.  Most folks have this idea that you get in on the ground floor and work your way up, to the top and to the rewards.  Herb talked about the pyrimad structure and that the base is large and one works their up to the top, you're alone as the ceo or the president and the rest of the company is supporting you.

Herb liked to talk about inverting the pyrimad and stated that the base, or kev stated, the power is on the shop floor.  As someone is working their way to the office of the president or the CEO, they are actually working their way down the pyrimad.  If you picture the inverted pyrimad, the CEO is supporting the VP's, who are supporting the Managers who are supporting the Supervisor's who are supporting the Employee's.  The higher up you go corporate ladder, the more weight is put on your shoulders.

thank you for returning to the subject.  DL had previously announced that it would no longer put its code on any AS flights which DL also serves so all of this was expected.

The only route on this list that DL doesn't have plans to serve (or hasn't announced) is SEA-IAH...hmmm.

do you know if dl is going to do sea-bwi at some point?    I think FL used to do one or 2 flights a day but I think it been toast for a while

robbed,
thanks for your question and good observation regarding BWI.

I would give a chance of a BWI-SEA route as very, very low.

First, DL's buildup at SEA is predominantly focused on the western US.  The majority of connections which DL needs for its Asian network are on the west coast.
The intra-west flights such as to Alaska and Hawaii are in part designed to create flows which ensure the necessary spokes such as from California can remain viable even when the Asian flights  are not strong such as in the winter.

Second, longhaul flights are higher risk and have higher costs.  there is a lot less reason to add alot of longhaul domestic flights to SEA esp. since many of the same markets in Asia can connect over DTW.

Third, the longhaul domestic flights that DL adds will be where DL can generate a high amount of local traffic to/from Asia.  Given that IAD has a number of int'l carriers, the chances of DL trying to compete for that traffic is low.

My guess is that the most obvious longhaul (transcon or near transcon flights) nonhub cities that DL would add from SEA would be the big Florida cities.

DL flies JFK to SEA multiple times per day.  EWR is doubtful since UA has multiple flights to Asia already.

BOS, like EWR, is well connected to DTW.

As of this summer, the only flights that SEA will have that DTW doesn't will be HKG and HND (which is also served from LAX and DL is restarting LAX-BOS) while DTW has NGO but SEA does not.

It is likely that DL will add more service from JFK-Asia but the focus right now is on the west coast.

Not sure if you are aware but DL pilot chat forums say that DL is investigating several opportunities to acquire used widebodies along with some unique new widebody opportunities.
