Delta pilots to strike?

A strike will most likely kill the airline. This won't be a srike, but a mass quitting.

It would be difficult, to say that you are wrong !!

HOWEVER,

The question must be asked,

"When is ENOUGH, ENOUGH " ???????????

IF DL gets this latest proposed concession
OR,
DALPA does not STRIKE, the DL pilots will have "relinquished" (approx.) "50%" of there $$$pay, and probably NO "DB" pension.

So I'll ask the question again,
"WHEN is ENOUGH, ENOUGH"

I wonder how low they will go. The NW pilots just agreed to NW management's demand for 60% of their second round ask. With the first round a few months ago, it is said that this adds up to a 39% total paycut so far. NW will seek the other 40% of the second round next year. That might put them at 50% total paycuts plus the possible termination of pension and other benefits.

Keep in mind there are an awfull lot of un-employed pilots on the street. For DL pilots to force a lock-out or liquidation of DL....will result in them flying for even less money than DL concession money.

Ohhhh....forgot one thing. DL hired a bunch of EA's pilots after they went on strike and became "locked-out."

Old habits may be hard to break. ;)

I'm wrong? On what point?

Do you actually believe Delta can survive a pilots' strike? That's all I'm saying.

That's the point. A pilots' strike would kill the company. Everyone knows this - including DALPA.

These aren't mechanics being asked to make $50k instead of $80k. These are guys making six figures being asked to make lower six figures. Hard to match that salary doing something else without significant experience.

Like the pilots at AA, this is more about perserving the pensions. AA pilots at retirement get lump sum payouts of between $1,000,000.00 - $1,750,000.00.

At AA the pilots' union agreed to concession talks with the company and they insisted that the other unions, the TWU and APFA also give more!

What a pair of gonads!

They will do whatever it takes to perserve their pensions, no matter who else it affects!

if DL pilots go on strike, how long could they survive before it hurts them hard in the pockets?

I don't think it matters. If they go on strike, even for one day, Delta is out of business. Whoever buys their assets, whatever assets are worth buying, anyway, will be hiring back a bunch of their own furloughed pilots.

I think (hope?) DALPA isn't stupid enough to actually strike.

They'll have a hard time living peacefully in Peachtree City if they do.

I am a Delta flight attendant whose already stressful job is being made more stressful by the comments and posturing of the Delta pilots. Every day I am at work I encounter at least on FO who is planning on "shutting Delta down" and moving on to "other careers". Yet, not once have I been on a trip that was the first officer's last trip at Delta.

The same guys who complain about being gone from home so much for so little have some how in the meantime started these lucrative new careers. Some of these new careers have been described as "working for my father in law", "contractor" and a "sales job". The pilot who is getting a wonderful new sales job at some unknown company would not be able to sell ice and gas to a hurricane victim. I myself am lining up a job as "America's next top model".

I am a Delta flight attendant...

I truly feel for you and the other employees at Delta whose careers for the moment ride with a bunch of deluded and brainwashed cowboys.

If they honestly believe they can make anything near what they'd make even under the concessions by doing anything else, they're seriously deluded. I've seen where some think that whoever buys DL's assets will hire them. The problem is that those other airlines have their own unions to deal with, and will be hiring back their own furloughed pilots to do the flying. DL's pilots will be way down the list.

Here's to hoping that DALPA comes to their senses and negotiates in good faith a reasonable compromise with DL. I hope the BK judge tomorrow puts the decision off for 30 days for more negotiation.

Of course I do have a selfish bias. I just saw my wife off on a business trip this morning returning Thursday, and Thursday I head out on my own business trip returning Monday. I really don't want to deal with strike issues in either case.

Although I won't rule it out, I think a strike is more likely NOT to happen. However...I DO think that there is high probability that there may be alot of sick pilots over the holidays. So the more pertinant question is...how long can DL survive a massive, non-strike disruption to their operations. A strike would be a near-immediate death (one to two weeks max...with nearly all employees being sent home in the meantime w/o pay) but I'm not sure about a sick-out. I think even a few days of that would make it nearly impossible for DL to come back and would definitely negate the sacrafices that the rest of the workgroups have recently made. Either action would be preposterous at such a time. I smell Eastern...Sad.

Well I for one hope you're right abotu the strike (and I think you are) but wrong on the sickout. As a passenger, I love Delta Airlines. I strayed to NW for a while, but I came back when DL rescinded their customer-unfriendly medallion rules. Something's just different, and better, at DL despite the occasional headaches. I'd hate to see all of that ruined.

I think a sickout, in the end, causes as much trouble as a strike, but like you said it will just be more protracted. I tend to think the Delta pilots are smart enough to see that. I suffered through the "no overtime" thing at at the end of 2001. I don't think DL can survive that kind of disruption again in this climate.

My gut tells me that DALPA is just doing its job and talking tough, but I'm still very nervous until the results of the BK hearing tomorrow are released.

I agree that DALPA is mostly just posturing on this one. The problem is that even with no strike or no sickout, it is already adversely affecting the company significantly. Just as you have concerns...so do millions of other potential customers and that spells lower bookings and higher cancellations. This will be the case NOW regardless of whether or not there is any action. The rhetoric is already causing great damage to a wonderful company. So scenario 3...no strike, no sick out...how long can DL survive while DALPA is scaring away customers.

That is what gets me...there never seems to be any thought into the adverse consequences of these actions.
