NMB to allow American Airlines agents and representatives vote on union representation

The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA has persuaded the National Mediation board to call an election to decide if it can be the bargaining agent for passenger agents and representatives at American Airlines.

That's the group from which 1,200 job losses were announced on Wednesday.

News of the NMB's decision Thursday came not from the AFA-CWA, but from the air carrier. We have this statement Thursday from American spokeswoman Missy Cousino:

"Today, American Airlines received notification that the National Mediation Board (NMB) has authorized a union representation election for American's Agents and Representatives to decide whether they wish to remain independent or instead become members of the Communications Workers of America (CWA). The NMB did not give a specific date for the election.
"The company maintains its original position that the union did not demonstrate sufficient interest from the employees to qualify for an election. American is reviewing the NMB's ruling and will continue to review its options as we await additional information from the NMB."

The AFA-CWA has asked U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Sean Lane, via an "Ad Hoc Committee of Passenger Service Agents," to keep American from making "unilateral changes in the terms and conditions of employment."

Just wondering, since Parker seems to have made a deal with the 3 big unions at AA, where does that leave us? I know our contract is currently in progress and the NMB just ruled that agent at AA will be having a vote for CWA representation.

American filed the lawsuit against the NMB in U.S. District Court in Fort Worth. The company is refusing to provide employee information for the election. Guess they don'y want to play and they are taking their ball home.
