Common Core-In Your Schools

Here's what 20,000 teachers think....

A large majority of K-12 teachers say that new learning standards now being implemented in most states will improve students' thinking skills, a new survey suggests.

A poll of more than 20,000 teachers, out today from the children's publisher Scholastic Inc., finds that about three-fourths of teachers think the standards known as Common Core will improve students' abilities to reason and think critically. Only 8% say Common Core will have a negative impact on the classroom as schools retool to comply with the new standards.

Common Core is designed to replace the USA's patchwork of state standards in math and reading, with goals that emphasize critical thinking and a more thorough understanding of a few key topics.

The National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers in 2009 launched the effort. All states except for Alaska, Nebraska, Texas and Virginia quickly signed on, helped in part by President Obama, who tied "college and career-ready standards" to billions of dollars in federal grants.

Hmmmm. Since the teachers' unions have contributed more to OBAMA than most others, this must be how Obama is going to scratch their backs. This is obviously approved by teachers, meaning that they will find another way to blame the parents and society for their dumb kids, or create the illusion that all the children are special. Brilliant!

Yes, clueless, and my point is that there is a brain-washing taking place.

I suppose one could call anything brainwashing.

I can take an objective look back at my expensive parochial school education, and honestly say that they tried. And tried damn hard, quite possibly without even knowing it, since they were also indoctrinated at an early age, while at the same time warning about the dangers of "those other people" who brainwashed their kids.

Ditto for a dozen or so of mostly SBC church services and study groups I sat through, and participated in, before I finally got it that the true believers were not interested in asking questions, thinking, or learning - or in anyone who was. All they were interested in, and this was in my experience universal, was repeating the story, and those who repeated the story, and who had the same basic testimony that they did.

( its not that hard, try to keep up...)

Personally, I would define brainwashing as something like telling someone what, or how, to believe an think.

Providing information or encouragement, or even help, is not.

I am not going to listen to Lady Gaga to find out what she is saying, because I don't enjoy listening to her. That doesn't mean she has no talent, or that she is wrong, or right, or anything else. It means I am not going to listen to her because I don't enjoy listening to her.

"I could not have given them the quality of education or the depth of experience they got at the local public schools.

No way, No how"

I was talking about my situation, no one else's.

You are largely right about city schools in poorer districts. You forgot that the same goes for rural schools in poorer districts.

And, yup, that is a big part of why I chose to live the last quarter century somewhere that I personally didn't really like, because the opportunities for them were more important than the condo in the city and cabin in the mountains that I wanted.

It didn't take a lot of $$$. My kids went to school with kids of all backgrounds, with the curve heavily weighted to pretty squarely middle middle class, a lot of who's parents graduated from the same school system, and never went to college. I could have kept the home we had and raised them driving a bus, or working at nearly anything. Some of the extras wouldn't have happened, but they'd have had a good education, and a safe environment.

I suspect there are a few Republicans living in the cities. So that attempt at a slam doesn't really fly, far.

Lady Gaga is part of a conspiracy?

Anything these folks don't like, anything remotely connected to Obama, anything that offends their delicate sensibilities, anything that Rush or Mommy Roth says should worry them, anything they are afraid of, justified or not, etc.

It is all a conspiracy

All of it

Including Lady Gaga

Then there's the progressive leftist version on how it should be......

Channel Margaret Singer much?

I’m trying to keep up, honestly.

In your second paragraph, it took some time to determine that you were referring to your parent’s effort to brainwash you. Despite your childhood religious indoctrination from brainwashed religious parents, your expensive parochial school education and your active participation in dozens of SBC church service and study groups, you failed to demonstrate how that educational experience brainwashed you. If you were truly brainwashed you would have never finally “got” anything outside of your religious indoctrination.

What point are you trying to make? Are you suggesting that your religious educational experience has denied you the ability to become a more productive and positive role model for future generations?

Not sure what universe you are in, but in my universe we question the intelligence of anyone who believes that providing free medical services to the poor, provide food and shelter to the poor, funding education to the poor etc. is to be brainwashed.

Could it be that you have been brainwashed into believing that you have been brainwashed by religious indoctrination?

Turn the channel, flip the page, you’re being indoctrinated by radical liberal media sources every day.

When did you stop questioning all forms of authority?

Brainwashed I would say.

I didnt say a word about my parents. They just sent me to the "good" schools, because they had grown up very poor and wanted to do better for us.

The schools, otoh, were very much learn by rote, believe this, and all those other people are wrong, especially the communists, who brainwash and indoctrinate their poor kids in school and thier outside activities.

All the while they were doing the exact same thing, just to a different belief.

I think my comments about church were pretty clear, especially the part about how they pretty much universally didn't want to hear, and discouraged, any real questions or thought. I never stopped asking, respectfully. I don't believe that god is threatened much by my asking who decided what books to put in the bible, for instance. The response? Usually something like " you might be putting doubts in other people's minds, and we wouldn't want that..."

Who was threatened? Follow the money. All those folks with cushy church / minister job were threatened, if too many folks start thinking. "Can't have folks thinking, without us there to tell them what, and how."

That's brainwashing, and control thru fear ("thinking that way could lead you to a bad place... ") and peer pressure.

I don't think anything I said suggested that I ever stopped asking questions, questioning authority, or thinking critically. I said it was frowned upon, and worse...

I never said being charitable was being brainwashed. That is ridiculous. Where did you find that straw man laying around? Jst makes you look stupid.

I don't listen to any "liberal media". And damn little media at all. I read news at a pretty wide variety of the most neutral, or at least highest quality sources I can find, and I stay completely away from the obviously biased sites when or if I have the urge to look into something.

Really it was all pretty clear, so, I really wonder about your comprehension skills, and when this got to be all about me, and if you are really about anything other than you being right.

You claim that lady gaga is brainwashing people by sharing info about the exchanges. Or maybe she is even encouraging them to sign up, and maybe even stating her opinion that the ACA is a good thing.

That is not brainwashing, you just want to demonize it.

You don't like ACA, or Obama, or her, and you don't want the message out, so..... Voila.... Must be something sinister going on.... Aha. Brainwashing...

BS

It's a public service announcement., or an entertainer expressing an opinion.

No different than Rush, bill, Sean, or Rachel, or any of the rest of the hordes of raving heads and fear dealers doing the same.

Get over yourself, and, maybe, turn off the talk radio and fox/msnbc/anything like them.

Methinks thou dost protest too much, and probably spend a bit too much time with the FauxNewsErtainment crowd.

Imthink they done pulled an Alinsky in referse on ya'

You too Dude...

Sorry

Good thing you corrected all those misspelled words.......I thought you were Tree for a minute.

IPad not the easiest thing to type on, and it changes stuff after you think you are done sometimes...

Sorry for the inconvenience.
