As you must know, it is Canadian Helicopters policy to update our compensation policies on May 1st each year. This year, however, the process was delayed due to a number of factors, some of which were out of our control (such as our flight paramedics choosing to be represented by a trade union).
We also took some time to re-evaluate elements of our compensation structure that were brought up by pilots and AMEs during our base visits in May and June, which deserved thorough examination.
Even though all increases apply retroactively to May 1, 2004, we apologize for the inconvenience.
1. Aircraft Maintenance Engineers (AMEs) and Apprentices
• Base salary and AME allowance are both increased by 2.5%, as per the following schedule:

• Base salary and Captain allowance are both increased by 2.5%, as per the following schedule:

3. Co-Pilots
During our base visits, co-pilot compensation was the subject of a number of comments and observations from co-pilots themselves, as well as a sizeable number of their co-workers. We carefully examined suggestions that were made, keeping in mind the necessity of not driving ourselves out of the EMS compensation market in Canada.
As a result of this exercise, the following changes are made.
• Levels C, D and E of the pay scale are abolished. Other levels are increased by 2,5% and co-pilot allowance is increased by 9%, as per the following schedule:

• Co-pilot allowance is increased to $700 per month (from $643)
• As a result of further discussions with employees, Level 1 cap on the Captain pay scale for Captain-Qualified co-pilots is abolished, allowing them to progress to Levels 2 and higher after 12 months. For the transition period, the increase will be effective after 12 months of captaincy qualification of May 1, 2004, whichever comes later. In other words, all co-pilots with 12 months or more of captain qualification as of May 1st, will move up to level 2 of the captain pay scale retroactive to May 1st.
Based on the information we have, this should resolve a major irritant for captain-qualified co-pilots, and should make captain qualification even more attractive to co-pilots.
In our opinion, these increases further establish CHL EMS’ as an industry leader in the matter of compensation.
