Changing Flight Numbers

I have a different thought.

The public has access to, or can have disclosed to them, the OT performance of specific flights of specific carriers.

Sooooooooooooo, if UDA (UnDisclosed Airline, ;) ) Flight 1 ,operating from NYC to LAX is congenitally late,

it becomes

Flight 2, operating NYC-LAX.

You gotta admit, it's the cheapest and easiest solution to the problem!

I was told a few years back that it was due to the OT performance %. Changing the flight number shortens the history of cronically late flights. It's also easy for a pax to remember that flight 49 to SFO at 4:00pm is always late, but he'll fly flight 23 to SFO at 4:05 not realizing it's the same flight that was always late before the schedule change. Sometimes a change in the departure time isn't needed to make them think it's a different flight either.

Question:
How many of the non employee board readers use the 1 - 1 1/2 month old
DOT on time numbers as criteria for their flight choice?

My uneducated guess is that it does not come in to play very often.

Scheduling, in my opinion, is done the same old tired way it has always
been done. Like other areas, that could be a problem for US.

When I'm making a tight connection (or any connection involving PHL), I check the DOT numbers.

Unfortunately with the lag time involved in the numbers reporting, what you might be seeing (good or bad) may no longer be the case in many instances if weather were involved. If you have a bad month of weather that runs things 16 mins late every day, you're going to get a bad number, but you might still make all the connections because most everything would be running late, but if you had a decent month with a couple of problems with a 45 min delay, it might show an 8, but you would have a hard time making conx on those days it was late. And it might show a 9, but if its late on the day you want to go, it really doesnt matter what it did the other 29 days does it?
