American, Alaska deepen ties

Wow, when American absorbs Alaska Airlines, AMFA will be the Union for the mechanics, normally the larger union takes over, but a new precedence has been set by the Association....

How long's it been since they cut their NRT flight?
AA cut the SEA-NRT flight in January, 2002, as it was preparing to begin JFK-NRT in April, 2002. AA never really wanted SEA-NRT, but back in the 1990s, AA was desperate to fly to Tokyo and SEA was available.

Correct. 06-Jan-2002.

US-Japan authority was so hard to get at the time that AA would fly just about anything to have an Asian footprint, hence both SEA-NRT and DFW-KIX.

Then, 9/11 hit, and AA deferred as many aircraft as it could which were planned for delivery between 2002 and 2006. Something had to give, and both DFW-KIX & SEA-NRT were sacrificed to free up 777 time that was supposed to be provided by the deferred deliveries. SJC-KIX was also killed off on 12-Oct-2001, which may have been before the deferrals were made public. SJC-NRT stuck it out until 2006.

and again the question is what economic basis there is to think that AA could succeed in relaunching SEA-Asia service now that hasn't existed.

AA already codeshares on some SEA flights now... this isn't the addition of a whole new city to AA's codeshare network that hasn't existed before. It is simply the addition of formerly/currently US operated flights. The impact of that is more likely to be felt in other parts of the AA network than SEA. Addition of the AS code to PHL or CLT could dramatically strengthen AS' access in the eastern US.

just looking for the basis that this expanded codeshare relationship between AA and AS will justify new AA international flights from SEA.

This time a year ago, AA had its code on over 125 flights/day from SEA that were operated by AS. This move adds about 10% more. is an additional 15-20 flights/day really going to make a difference in whether AA can succeed or not from SEA with int'l flights?
