AL and DC-9-5

What was first Phoenix or Las Vegas?

I believe when PHX started up the flight continued on to TUS if I remember correctly.

Florida was a late entry to for AL back then, wasn't it like 1977 or78 FL service started?
All I remember about North Central is they merged with Southern Airways and formed Republic Airlines. Their first date was July 1, 1979. I remember that day cause I was on the innagural flight from MSP-DEN. I think Hughes Air West merged sometime later. I miss them, The Top Banana in the west.

The I flew the original Frontier from DEN-COS. It was a Prop job, I want to say a convair, but could have been a Lockheed Electra. I believe when NW bought out Republic, that is how NW got a Hub there.

if i remember correctly, FL service was started very soon after
deregulation..AL initally started serving TPA witb the "rocket",
BAC111 from BWI, with usually a fuel stop. Had to use it or lose it..

Allegheny registered the name USAir in 1974 in preparation for the name change in October 1979. In April 1979, service expanded to Phoenix. The airline’s first expansion post-deregulation was Florida, Houston, Birmingham, and Memphis.

The Frontier trip was on a Convair 580. It had Allison 501 Turboprop engines, the same engines and propellers that the Lockheed L188 Electra had. That might be why you thought it was an Electra. Both were neat airplanes for their day.

I have a mid-70's timetable from AL that sports the cover "Introducing the NEW DC-9-50." It's a hoot. The hair. The clothes. The mod-a-go-go aircraft interiors. Also have stuff like a pocket knife that was given to customers (imagine that, post 9/11) with the words 'Allegheny Airlines....Air Commuter Service in 12 busy states" on the blade. And a bronze coin from Ed Colodny commemorating the name change from AL to US.

I think I'm the only person in the world who still likes the polished metal, maroon/red/orange color scheme. I wish there were a heritage aircraft with those colors...

And the table seats in rows 1/2. I remember flying to my interview ATL-PIT and sitting backwards...and they served me soup/sandwich. It was turbulent, and I arrived at my interview with my tie covered in some sort of corn chowder.

Nowadays, with the hideous chicken caeser sandwich for purchase, I'd gladly take the corn chowder option.

Thanks for the link, thats really cool. I looked at an Eastern Timetable from 1971, and it had a 747 drawing on the cover. I never thought that they had one. I know Delta had a 747. And American. I think they donated theirs to NASA to haul the shuttle around. The first merger post deregulation was North Central and Southern, or was there one before that?

I grew up pretty much underneath the flight path to T. F. Green Airport (PVD) and I remember the AL DC-9-50s well...noisy too! PVD was one of the first cities to get D95 service.

cool timetables

Glad to see some history here, instead of just fighting.

Anyone know of a site for old inflight magazines?

If anyone can teach me how to scan it on to the internet, I have some old PSA timetables, magazines, & posters that I would like to see preserved for the future.
Or send me a PM & I'll get back to you!

Have to agree with you on that one, but I'm still proud of that smile, sentimental value which happens to all of us.
Kind of like back in 198? my sister came for a visit, I took her to the San Diego Air Museum, there was an A-4 aircraft on display there with ropes around it, I went under one of the ropes went up & kissed the airplane, because that was my first case of puppy-love for airplanes. Since then I've loved & hated many airplanes, but now that there gone I miss all of them. Sorry about rambling, just an old guy reminising about the past.

I remember when al flew dc-9's and bac 111's from hvn to dca & alb back in the 70's.The bac 111 I feel was responsible for the anti airport crowd which to this day fights any airport project. It was the loudest airliner I ever heard. The aircraft would be several miles away after take off and the roaring would still roll in.It was a great airport to watch jet airliners land & take off.Today all hvn has is dash 8's.A emb 170 to clt would be a nice addition.

EA had a few 747's to keep up with everyone else. I know that DL only had 5 or so, and even National had a few for a while.

HVN is a huge untapped market. Back in the 90s we served HVN with DH8s to PHL,BWI and DCA and D38s to PIT. CO flew ATRs to EWR and UA even flew 737s to ORD 2x a day. Now we are the only ones serving HVN with 6x a day to PHL.
Located between LGA and BDL, HVN has a huge population base as well as being a huge university town.
