AL and DC-9-5

Maybe it's time to have a lighten things up a bit or, at least, have a trip down memory lane.

1. How long did Allegheny fly the DC-9-50? (I know it wasn't very long and EA wound up with them.)

2. Why were sold so soon?

The new look premiered with a new aircraft type: the DC-9 series 50 aircraft in 1975. This new airplane provided more capacity, and kept costs down as it was simply a stretch of the DC-9 series 30 aircraft. Allegheny thought this would achieve the balance in higher density markets that had been tried five years earlier with Boeing 727-200’s. However, shortly after delivery of eight aircraft, the DC-9 series 50 was severely weight-restricted in several key Allegheny markets. What was originally thought would be a benefit was now another headache; reduced passenger capacity, and less ability to carry mail or airfreight made the aircraft too expensive for Allegheny’s needs.

Allegheny and Eastern Airlines entered into an agreement to swap Allegheny’s DC-9-50’s for an equal amount of Eastern’s DC-9-30’s. The final transaction was completed in 1978.

WOW! Thanks for that bit of info. I always thought AL had the DC-9-30"s, never remembered the 50's. That explains why then, only 3 years.

The MD-80's all came from PSA?

I remember when US/AL got the 727's. They were their pride and joy. They featured them to LAX and SF!

First we got sonme old 727 100's fom UA and ran them on our big new run to IAH which was via SDF at first. First entry into a warm climate. We were so excited. LOL! The 727-200's came later and yes, went to LAX and SFO. I took the inaugural 727 to SFO since it started in my hometown. We started the 727's to PHX when that city came online and that was before Calif cities.

I remember when AL first started service to PHX it was to PIT and believe it or not MSP on the 727.
I remember when Braniff closed down the first time we flew the 727 from LGA to DFW

Thinking we could pick up the market share. We stoped the service after 2 or 3 days if

I remember correctly.

Had to bring out my old 1979 Allegheny timetable that I still have. Fun to look back at all this. We served PHX-PIT,MSP,CLE and TUS.
Some other strange routes back "in the day" were MSY-BNA,BHM as well as CVG-DTW,MCO and MSP-BUF,LGA.

The Allegheny Commuter system flew into some small and I mean small cities like Cape May,NJ/Milville,NJ/Elkins,MD/Ocala,FL,Lakeland,FL

Elkins, is in West Virginia. Elkton is in Maryland.

I would think the W.Va. town.

My mother always talks about her first time flying. She claims it was Allegheny. She always talks as if that was the only airline she can remember from the "old days". Were they that big here in DTW? It seems she would have remembered North Central.

What was first Phoenix or Las Vegas?

I believe when PHX started up the flight continued on to TUS if I remember correctly.

Florida was a late entry to for AL back then, wasn't it like 1977 or78 FL service started?

All I remember about North Central is they merged with Southern Airways and formed Republic Airlines. Their first date was July 1, 1979. I remember that day cause I was on the innagural flight from MSP-DEN. I think Hughes Air West merged sometime later. I miss them, The Top Banana in the west.

The I flew the original Frontier from DEN-COS. It was a Prop job, I want to say a convair, but could have been a Lockheed Electra. I believe when NW bought out Republic, that is how NW got a Hub there.

There's a great old commercial for Hughes Air West on Youtube. I'd post the link, but I don't know how. Anyway, I wonder if people that worked there ever actually saw Howard Hughes-or was he in isolation wearing kleenex boxes on his feet then?
