US Airways Crash Pilot “Held his Cool,â€￾ According to Colleague

Journal reporter Susan Carey with details on Chesley Sullenberger, a veteran US Airways pilot who was reportedly the captain of flight 1549.
Rick Kurner, another US Airways pilot, says he has flown with Capt. Sullenberger for 23 years, since the days when they both were employeed by Pacific Southwest Airlines, which was acquired by US Airways in 1986. “He’s always been an unbelievable professional,â€￾ says Mr. Kurner, a first officer. “He takes care of his crew and always make sure what needs to be done gets done.â€￾
Kurner says when he heard it was Capt. Sullenberger — “Sullyâ€￾ to all his friends — who was flying the plane that landed safely in the Hudson, he wasn’t at all suprised. “He held his cool. Where am I going to go? City? City? River.â€￾
Kurner says about five years ago, he was in the cockpit with Capt. Sullenberger when the airplane had a hydraulic failure on a trip from Toronto to Pittsburgh. The captain was completely nonchalant and “it was a non-event because of Sully,â€￾ he recalls. “He’s just a pleasure to fly with. He’s a professional, a good guy. He loves his family and wife and kids. That’s all he speaks of.â€￾

Thank you god for looking our for our crew and our passengers

What a remarkable job this pilot did in making a split decision and landing the aircraft on the Hudson River fully in tact and stayed behind to make sure all pax got off the plane safely with very few injuries except bumps on the head. After being treated at local hospitals, the pax's are home enjoying dinner with their families tonight. The pilot, crew and pax's truly had the Lord watching over them and delivering them to safety. God Bless Everyone!

I truely hope the company has treated this crew a little bit better than just a typical unscheduled overnight, and DH home tomorrow (or DH home tonight if they got out of there)

As a former employee, I must admit my stomach fell when I heard the news on the radio. You never quite get this industry out of your system. Thankfully it appears that there were no fatalities or serious injuries.
This is an excellent example of why the flight crews earn their salary. What a fantastic Captain and F/O! The Flight Attendants performed their REAL jobs as the professionals they are!! This is what it is all about - safety and what to do in an emergency.
Congrats and hats off to the crew of 1549 for doing an excellent job!!

A fantastic job by the flight crew. It doesn't appear to have been mentioned yet, but based upon the radar track, it appears that just south of the GW Bridge the Captain also had to contend with General Aviation traffic. It appears separation was about 500ft vertical and maybe a few hundred feet horizontal.

Radar track is here:

http://www4.passur.com/lga.html

set the time to 15:25...take off was 1526; traffic was encountered at 15:29.

Amazing flying.

Excellent Job by all crew. Its amazing to me that New York has NO video of this. New York has the most cameras in this NATION, and no video of the amazing job done by the captain has surfaced.
