Not having Southwest sign an agreement to move to DFW before they started operating at Love was a huge mistake.

For a predAAtory carrier, yes...but for the good of the industry, no. Who would be around to be profitable today if we allowed Braniff and AMR to ensure that WN would be crushed within the first year or two of ops? We should have made B6 fly only out of ORD and FL fly only out of MSP. That way we could ensure that competition could not exist. But maybe you are right...maybe we need artificial barriers to entry so that we don't continue to have over-capacity issues...and to do so, we should write anti-competitive legislation. That is the American way, after all.

In one sentence you talk about protecting a carrier so that it's not crushed. In the next sentence you talk about a hands off approach to competition. Come on. You can't have it both ways.

All I was saying was that it was the intention of the cities of Dallas and Fort Worth to close DAL to commerical aviation once DFW was built. That's why they had all the carriers that operated at DAL at the time, sign an agreement that they would move. Apparently, Dallas forgot to have WN sign the document before they started operating from DAL.

Why is it that you think that WN wouldn't have survived if they would have moved to DFW? Are you saying that they were artificially protected by staying at DAL?

IT was the mistake of Braniff and TI...Southwest wasn't operating because of the efforts of those two to keep them out of the sky. I'm certain that had SWA been operating, they would have signed the agreement.

SWA probably isn't interested in flying non-stop from LUV to every destination in their system, but if they could add 5-6 new non-stops they would likely back off on the political pressure. If SWA could add LUV-MDW, LUV-LAS, LUV-LAX, LUV-BWI/PHL, and LUV-TPA/ORL the campaign to repeal the amendment will cool down a lot, in my opinion.
