"That's ridiculous," said Baird, a law professor at the University of Chicago. "The idea that you can make someone work under terms of a contract they didn't agree to is something we haven't permitted since the 13th Amendment," which outlawed slavery.

I personally don't know how you employees left standing do it. I am 53 with many years at U taking care of very serious health issues with my spouse and decided that enough is enough and retired with a minuscule retirement that the PBGC holds the fate of. It didn't matter that I was no longer young, sanity is more important. After months away from U and it's woes I know I made the right decision. God Bless the employees taking the hits. I know very well how damn hard working there is not only financially but mentality.

Curt

I'm glad you are happy with your decision. I think many of us have come to a certain reslove where the company is concerned. I hope the very best for you and your wife. I hope she is better. Take care.

Kurt,

I slavery is a situation where we all would have no choice but to work here. You are a good axample of this not being the case, we all have a choice.

This is a market driven economy, and the airlines that can offer cheap fares while making a profit are the ones that will be around...it took 25 years + after deregulation for this trend to deeply root, and it is now.

If US Airways employees who want to stay have any chance to do so, it will be under a cometitive cost structure.

From my own recent experience, the alternative of going to a Low Cost Carrier is far worse than taking the cuts here, and that of course is assuming that you would get a job offer.

Good luck to you in your new life and Happy Holidays!

Well, it will be only under good leadership. "Competitve cost structure" is but a delaying action to buy time for bad leadership. It's specious to tell only part of the story.

Thanks "FIRST" and "UYH" for the well wishes....

I don't know if I consider what is happening to the airline employees a "choice". Yes I did choose to leave but given my situation, it was just about mandatory to move on and away from the airline industry. I was very fortunate in that I do have other skills outside of the industry, most airline employees still working don’t and why they stay. You really can't blame airline employees for not having several skills, after all, this was supposed to be a “lifetime†deal. They are normal human beings who learned a skill and stuck to it not worrying about having several different skills "just in case". When you have big obligations and responsibilities it's not easy to simply change paths mid stream, mid life. You are older with less energy and looking forward towards retirement and not starting over. The ones saying, “Oh Just Start Over†don't walk in the employees shoes who don’t have other skills or a higher education coupled with the added disadvantage of age. Twenty year olds are brighter, faster, more eager and have not have been kicked in the teeth by life. It’s real easy for someone else to tell you to “just start overâ€, and it’s also very normal to be furious at what is happening to airline employees while the top dogs walk away with millions upon millions while the labor force wonders how to pay for the college education they promised to pay for or their mortgage and forget about buying a new automobile. Everything under the sun is going through the roof price wise while the airline workers lose money and benefits. For airline employee not to be mad, frustrated and outraged would be abnormal. I think what is happening in Philly right now is normal, not how good employees are performing while being pillaged and raped at the same time being asked to smile at the public. The ones on here criticizing the labor force and the 700UW’s are the ones who “have theirs†or they are in deep need of counseling. This is called God given common sense!

Curt,

I have no idea why you mentioned me, I don't have mine, I have all ready taken two massive hits and have had to adjust my lifestyle and do without.

I am not one to be quiet and let management steamroll the employees once again. I am a regular 40 hour a week worker, I am fortunate enough to have a say in my destiny and try to preserve as many jobs as possible with the least amount of pain of people.

I do not have a crystal ball to know what the future holds for myself nor any of my coworkers.

So please leave me out of your posts.

You took me completely out of context. You are so full of rage you can't think clearly and I truly feel for your troubled mind.

I am on your side 700UW, but then old grudges you obviously hold onto and with your attitude no one will see your side of the equation whether it's reasonable or otherwise.

Trust me 700UW. I will indeed leave you out of my posts and please reciprocate.

Peace___Curt

I think all of us have mixed emotions where the company is concerned. One moment I am as cold as ice and the next moment I am rooting for the home team. I think all of us need to step back and not get too out of line, myself included. I think the back and forth feelings of so many of us is actually healthy, as it shows we are human and through our humanity comes understanding and resolve. I know I have been guilty of harsh words, but let's not forget that whatever view point, dialogue makes for thought provoking decicisions. Some people just clash where the ol chemistry department is concerned. I mean, we are on the computer and to try to really understand another "real, live" person would be a outrageous task. Maybe we all need to chill for a while. ;)

Im with ya there, First, pass the wine and let's have a drink to wish the very best of everything to all of us here. And a peaceful and wonderful new year ahead, where ever it may take us.

Curt,

I am not full of rage, I am perfectly calm cool and collective.

It seemed your post portrayed to me at least it was negative towards me.

I have no problem with you mentioning something I posted or support, but I am trying to leave the negativity out of it.

Merry X-Mas Brother.

Thanks, WCG,
Already pissed off from some self righteous boob on another thread. So much for good cheer. Happy Happy!! :)

Baird is the one who is ridiculous. Things may suck, but to compare it to slavery is beyond preposterous. There is a door anyone is welcome to leave through.
