US joins all US carriers in suspending TLV service

DL had one flight from JFK to TLV divert to CDG   CNN is reporting that the airport in TLV is not closed but definitely US DL and UA is suspending service to TLV

It is not worth serving a city if there is rocket fire reaching the city and perhaps the airport.

Israel certainly knew what they were dealing with when they went after Hamas in the West Bank. Israel's economy is heavily dependent on tourism.

They have to figure out the problem.

If US and UA do not divert, I'm not sure I would want to be a crew member responsible for bringing the plane back out or in.

Also, DL's statement noted that they were working with the FAA. This isn't just an airline decision w/o FAA involvement.

US cancelled Flight 796 PHL-TLV   UA according to flightaware still shows flights 84 and 90 are operating tonite thought late nonetheless  DL diverted one flight

They went into the Gaza Strip, not the West Bank.

And no country would put up with hundreds of rockets being fired upon civilians, if you want to attack a country, attack the military, not schools, houses etc....

Hamas is hellbent on destroying Israel  therefore Israel is defending themselves as they Rightfully should.   Also interesting to note that LY will continue to fly to all 5 US cities they serve and the State of Israel is asking the US carriers not to cancel the flights and that they can guarantee thes safety of the Flight and the pax n crew

interesting news, robbed. where did you see that?

Supposedly LY's planes have electronic equipment to protect against missile attacks and the Israeli army is as well-equipped as they come but I'm not sure it is worth it for US carriers to try to fly there.

European carriers are still flying into TLV numerous flights are in the air as we type.

then it shouldn't be too hard for US airlines to find protection for the passengers that won't fly on DL, UA, and US.

cnn reported it.   its been a long known thing regarding LY and all Israeli airliners being equipped with the anti missile equip   but to do so on US airlines it would be too costly  not to mention less manuerability on the approach..  perhaps Meto can explain it more.   700  it was reported on cnn that an Air France was landing at the time  and so far youre correct that other air carriers are still flying there    I think this is more of abundance of caution given last thurs horrific missile downing of MH 17

and there are countries in Europe that are equally the enemies of the Arab world, if that is even the reason.

If it is simply that war games are coming too close to commercial aviation - which is the working theory regarding MH17, then it doesn't matter whose aircraft are in the way.

The US government undoubtedly wants to do what it can to minimize damage to Israel's economy but if there are risks to US aviation, that is the first priority.

The FAA has apparently banned US carriers from operating to/from TLV at the moment; the FAA is often seen as the leader in global aviation safety - even with its flaws.
IF other carriers and countries choose to operate to/from TLV, the burden will be very strongly against them if something happens, no matter how much support the Israeli military is willing to provide.

Hamas is lobbing rockets into Israel hoping for that lucky shot that kills hundreds of civilians. That lucky shot could come with a similar result as that in the Ukraine.

I hope the IDF finishes off the Gaza/E Jerusalem terrorists and supporters who danced in the streets on 9/11. I have no sympathy for them..
