US Airways Watch - January 12, 2005

PITTSBURGH (Post-Gazette) - US Airways tried to sweeten its cost-cutting offer to the 8,800-member International Association of Machinists, the last holdout in the company's pursuit of $1 billion in labor cuts. The offer still seeks to save $268 million annually and shrink the number of mechanics, baggage handlers, stock clerks and cleaners from about 4,600 to 2,603. But a new provision would ensure that any employees furloughed from outsourcing will have access to an additional three months of health-care benefits beyond the seven months they get and allow furloughed employees to cash out accrued sick time up to $5,000, get lifetime travel privileges for workers with more than 15 years of service and receive professional job-searching assistance. Airplane cleaners, the group standing to lose the most jobs, also will be offered full- or part- time positions as Philadelphia baggage handlers if they worked there previously. The company will delay any outsourcing until March 1 in hopes of vacancies resulting from early retirements. Employees who retire before March 1 will pay less for health coverage and be covered until they are 65.

US Airways is recalling furloughed baggage handlers from the Pittsburgh area and sending them to Philadelphia, where the company is short 150 to 200 positions.

The federal Air Transportation Stabilization Board expects to extend US Airways' use of more than $700 million in bankruptcy financing past Friday, when an agreement between the two parties is scheduled to expire.

The ramp jobs are non-exsistant.

The company is cutting 15% of the fleet service jobs, that is 600 fleet service jobs.

The laid-off fleet service workers 600 of them get first crack at any open jobs.

That is a carrot being dangled in front of them mule.

The jobs that might be offered after 600 fleet refuse them would be with no seniority and part-time.

So please explain how 1,938 laid of M&R employees are going to get jobs that do not exsist?

Don't let the facts get in your way.

Must be a sin for any company to try and make money eh---capitalism---not socialism--is where we're at----can't imagine Home Depot and Lowe's fighting it out with unions in their mist----"thats not my job" will not cut it. One of these forum rats said awhile back that "its a good union member that won't do anothers job" --in these times the job just needs to get done. My .02$

Interesting...now the company ADMITS that PHL is 150 to 200 baggage handlers SHORT!

They never cease to amaze.

I wonder how many rampers are going to accept recall from Pit to be transferred to Philly? That is a long way to move for not much money. You would think most could not afford to do that. If they turn down recall are they then fired?

They would not be terminated from the Company unless they had PHL listed as a recall city. If the didn't, they have recall rights back to PIT for 4 years from their furlough date. The only way that you can be terminated is if you refuse a recall to a city that you listed for recall rights. On another note, will these people who are offered PHL fall back to the starting pay rates? If so, the company has little chance of luring anyone to PHL from furlough.
Also, after spending 4 years on furlough without being recalled you are done with the company.

Ha, using the words union and morality in the same sentence is quite a stretch don't ya think?

The same way the even larger number of layed off employees have... either go out and find one, or wait for your turn to recall to the mainline with the rest of your coworkers.

Copping an attitude when so many others are furloughed is a joke.

In this situation AT LEAST you have a chance to recall into a FSA position. In Liquidation, NO ONE has a job to keep or return to...

I guess a lot of folks have'nt caught on yet this isnt an employment agency but a place of business.
