US Airways looks to other Asia routes

If the carrier wins approval for a nonstop China link, Tokyo might be next. It still seeks long-range jets

Where, without paying a premium (which he never does) do you suppose Parker is going to come upon an NRT slot?

I'm sure that the US carriers over there are going to be falling all over one another to transfer one.......

Last October, AA canceled its SJC-NRT flight - I don't know what happened to the NRT landing slots from that one, but some guessed they abandoned them.

Dunno the specifics of applying for NRT route authority, but perhaps it's possible.

BKK!!! There are only 2 daily non-stops that I can find. Thai flies LAX & JFK to BKK. Tried to non-rev there early Janurary and they were full!!

I doubt there is enough demand for a nonstop flight to BKK. Plus the nonstops that Thai flies from JFK and LAX are specially outfitted A345's that have 215 seats in a J/Y+/Y config to allow the range. J is 60" pitch, Y+ is 42" and Y is 36".

Tempe would cram all the seats in and make "unscheduled" fuel stops while still selling it as a nonstop.

No Bangkok. US can not compete with Thai. Its like a Used Beaten Down Yugo (US) against a New Lexus (Thai). And I bet US would still charge more.

To me, this is the most interesting aspect of this whole discussion regarding possible US Airways flights to Asia, any destination, not just BKK. Many of the Asian carriers offer far superior service to any of their US competition. The "new" US Airways lags behind the other North American carriers in terms of premium in-flight service. As the new kid on the block with inferior service, how does US Airways think they can possibly compete?

Perhaps they'll try to be the low-fare alternative to get to Asia, but then that defeats the purpose of chasing these historically high-yield routes.

Yea I was only dreaming about BKK. Went last year and loved Thailand. (Eating Thai food as I type this!)

Glad to know about Thais seat pitch and all. I was really dreading 17 hours on a plane. So whenever i go back I will do my best to fly Thai.

Apparently Thailand is becoming a medical tourist destination: elective and even non-elective surgery at much less cost and nicer facilities. The example I heard was knee replacement. I guess Thailand has been known for other kinds of unusual tourism as well.

It was a reference on the type of service to expect. They are much better than US will offer. I am not saying going to BKK, even NRT JAL is way better value. They got the name US Airways, you'd think they would want to have some class, some.
While I agree that US has service issues, it seems a little silly to keep running a service that admittedly loses and will continue to lose money, no? Oh well, at least Thai has their service!

AA used the NRT slots to start up LAX-NRT. NRT slots are hard to get as LHR slots. However unlike LHR NRT does not have a treaty governing which airlines can serve it. I have heard that once the new runway is extended to allow for large international aircraft new slots will be given out. As to how they are given out, raffle, most money, I am unsure.

Let me go on the record here. US will not be winning ANY Asia slots for a while.

But you can still dream about flying a big bird to NRT if you want to.
