It is sad because United was offering to pay $60.00 a share when they wanted to merge with USAIRWAYS..And the government said "NO!"...

And now see where we are...both have gone bankrupt!

Sure, but if you're an invester, what is the downside at $1.50 a share??? Even if you were a short-timer and caught a brief blip, the upside from $1.50 to $2.50 is substantial. And, $0.20 or $0.50 swings in the net share price is quite logical in today's market.

I should note that quite a few years ago, Air Tran's stock was on the ropes at about $2.25 a share and it was not certain as to whether or not they had enough capital to make it. I bougt in at $3.00 a share and bailed out when it was around $10.00 a share (too early), but a handsome profit off a $3.00 a share crap-shoot.

Same for last year on America West... Started out around $2/share at the beginning of 2003... Ended up around $11/share at the end of the year, making it one of the best investments on 2003. At one point, around Sept 03 they traded at over $16/sh, a possible profit of $14, or 700%. Of course, at $2/sh or less, BK risk was priced in, as it probably is for US Airways now.

Its not short covering. The short position even before this week was less than 2 or 3 percent. So all the shorts who were along for the ride have already cashed out.
